Only someone who has poor self-esteem eliminates those he perceives as a threat while a good leader surrounds himself/herself with competent individuals with outstanding knowledge and talent. With what he has done to senior military thus far is a crime and just underscores what a weak leader he is. I guess it follows that he is weak because his boss is a weak leader who is threatened by competency.

What Hegseth actually means is that he wants a neofascist military, in other words, a military that pledges allegiance to the Executive branch of government rather than to the current, pro-democracy Constitution.
The GOP's main problem with today's (outstanding) US military is that most of its members were sincere when they vowed to uphold the Constitution above anything else. The problem is that most of the military's leaders (including conservatives and registered Republicans) are pro-democracy.
So by a "lean" military, he means: a military purified of all pro-democracy leadership.
I agree with this right here. They do not want a military that is loyal to the Constitution. At all. Clearly this is what is going on. I think our military knows this. I would like to see him give a concrete reason he fired these people, or drove them out. He will never do that.

Yes, you and Liz R are right about the greed. That's a key factor in their actions, but I do believe it's a combo. The fear prevents them from ever contradicting the boss and if he's okay with what Hegseth is doing they are not likely to disagree.
