What an incredible story. A lovely way to start my Sunday.
The interesting thing is look how much debt so little money buys. This shows what a fraud our healthcare system is. It obviously doesn't cost as much as they make it seem.
It also shows how close to financial ruin many people live when they can't cover a $1000 medical bill. Not saying they did anything wrong. Just feeling compassion for the stress they live under.
Our mandated reliance thanks to our government (Republicans mostly). And you’re talking (well, writing 😉) to a Costco queen! I used to go with my parents to Price Club when I was a teenager, long before the merger.
My parents retired in Cabo San Lucas, BCS, MX in 1990 and when the Costco opened there we dubbed it “Cabco”.
That was an eye-opener to me as well. $17k will buy you that many millions in "medical debt"? I'd be happy to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign to do the same there and elsewhere.

I struggle with relying on church or other philanthropy that I feel is something we all as a country should be responsible for - that’s a longer post! But fund raising to help our neighbors builds community. And we need a lot more of that.

Wonderful story! And almost unbelievable these days. It gives me so much hope when a church does something that Jesus would actually do. There’s no place in church for hate. That word needs to be banned from religion. This church is living the Word of the New Testament, the Good News Jesus brought to all of us. No need for anyone else’s. Thank you Adam!!
Do they use leverage? There must be a class you can take to learn about that. Somehow rich people suck up money - it's working smarter than working harder, I've heard.
I've taken a time out over the last two days from social media and bad news. I saw your post this morning in my email, Adam, and scrolled past it. Then I remembered that Sunday is good news day. Thank you for doing this every week. I gives me hope and reignites my continued effort to help in my community.
What a blessing as I wipe my eyes. It's these stories that continue to give me Faith and Hope that my WW2 Dad now gone, my husband who served in the Navy and our Son in the Air Force and then National Air Guard didn't serve in vain. Democracy is shown in many ways including helping each other.💕

Absolutely. A government that doesn’t work for its people—the REAL people—is shameful.
The gratuitous expense is the result of our reliance on for-profit insurance companies.
Also, buying stuff in bulk is often a way to save, as any Costco member knows. 😁

This is a wonderful story and these people are truly living their Christianity. But it is yet another work-around in a profoundly broken system.
