I find it very comforting that you have the human quality to think of how many OTHERS were adversely affected by this lie. Talarico had the flu and he is a thick skinned politician. Regular people are not.

BigDaddy52's avatar

Thanks for the Eagleton mention. Came to mind immediately, on seeing this slop.

Gin's avatar

Thank you, Adam, for speaking out about getting help for mental health problems.

The GOP did not try to smear Talarico. A billionaire that we so kindly allowed into our country and that is determined to destroy our country and end our democracy did. His billions are being spent to overthrow our democracy and make us all peasants beholden to his whims and insanity.

Cecilia Pitas's avatar

Nonsense. Every GOP politician who did not or has not rejected the smear is complicit.

steve's avatar

Nonsense. It has already been reported that said billionaire's Super Pac has already spent $250,000 trying to smear Talarico. I wonder if Putin is participating too??? He is giving very good reasoning to have immigration restrictions. I am amazed they have not been lifted for Russian Oligarchs yet.

Louise Purfield-Coak's avatar

Florida is full of Russian Oligarchs. They came in under the first Trump Presidency! Any objections were smothered under the Russia Hoax. Now we know Russiagate wasn't a hoax as Putin and Trump stab Zelenski in the back! I am speaking of Trump's so called Diesel deal with Putin and the threat to Zelenski that the US will cut off both Arms and Intelligence to Zelenski if he doesn't stop blowing up Russian Oil Refineries! So sickening!

With Trump and the GOP’s wholehearted approval..

Thank you for bringing up that particular immigrant. The most glaring and egregious example of the administration’s double standard.

steve's avatar

He has already spent $276 million trying to influence OUR elections just in this cycle. Americans need to wake up and see who is really harming them.

Susheila Khera's avatar

Absolutely. And really, he’s only a citizen of the nation of the ultra-rich, focused only on feeding his insatiable greed.

And who was the Senator that took 3 months off the job due to depression and then voted healthcare out?? Republicans are scoundrels and Redcoats!

debbie's avatar

It was a U.S. Representative Tom Kean Jr. (R-N.J.) missed nearly four months of Congress—more than 140 votes—following a hospitalization and a diagnosis of depression.

Thank you for devoting an entire column to this particular bit of Republican chickenshit, Adam.

We should be scrutinizing not just the news, but who covers it and why, what they choose to say (and not to say). I know-nothing about this conspiratorial "influencer" but the New York Times covered Talarico's "absence" through a brainless 'he said-she said' type of reporting that lent an air of mystery to something which wasn't mysterious at all. It suggested the Talarico campaign was hiding something. What could it be, the reader wondered? Pointless intrigue flourished -- the truth got buried. Instead of uncovering a story., the Times just insulted the intelligence of its own readers.

Yes, the lie behind the lie is important to expose. But when accredited journalists who actually went to school to learn their craft, working in a newsroom where both accuracy and ethics are supposed to matter -- when they're lazy, sloppy or biased, we're in for it.

Maybe the 'October Surprise' people keep fearing isn't some kind of Big Bang involving ballot theft, the National Guard, or a 'splendid little war' somewhere, but this kind of eensy-weensy, chickenshit -- innuendos and idiocies about nothing whatever, spread through parts of the country where they still believe viruses aren't real, but Hillary's child pizza porn palace was.

We have the right to demand, not just free and fair elections, but a fourth estate that works a whole lot smarter than what we often see.

The Media is complicit in Trump’s rise to power; it normalized him snd his aberrant behavior.

Mark Rodin's avatar

Beware of any social media post posing as news and verify the source. Flu is not a mental health issue

Charlie's avatar

Nick Sortor (the guy who posted this lie) has a mental health issue, that's for sure.

Candace Bartsch's avatar

So So TIRED of the damaging crap that is out there. The pubs are really hurting. Put on your armor, pray and vote, vote, vote!!!!

Linda Lee Williams's avatar

We need to stats calling the pubs what they really are: “Cons.”

Hi Adam, to me, personally, this is one of the most important posts I've read in a long time. When I was in my late teens I couldn't live with the memories and the emotional pain. I was lucky. Someone I loved didn't know what was going on but he knew it was bad. He literally picked me up and carried me to the car. He took me to a mutual friend who happened to be a nun and a psychologist, His love and her compassion made me realize that getting help to live a productive and loving life was nothing to be ashamed of. The report about Talarico upset me. You are correct that getting help is strength, not a scandal. I hope, and believe, your post will help a lot of people. Thank you for addressing this issue! You are a good man.

Janice Adams White's avatar

Thank you, Adam, for your compassion. The tone of the Republican commercials in this election is disturbing but not surprising. We must reclaim honesty and decency.

Holly's avatar

Adam, thank you for shedding a light on the issue of mental health. My mother had severe depression that was never really addressed due to the stigma behind it. It was hard being a child with a poor mother dealing with that. Seeking help IS a show of strength! That being said, the fact that the ‘opposition’ even chose that as a negative slant to that young man’s campaign is troublesome. Ken Paxton has a lot of baggage and yet that seems to be okay with the GOP? Shame on all who would listen to that!

Joan Fregapane's avatar

Thank you for this! Seeking help for issues related to health IS the right and brave thing to do.

Jamie Butts's avatar

Meanwhile, the same people amplifying a fake mental health crisis willingly ignore the very real and objective proof of cognitive and psychiatric decline in their false idol. It's maddening. These people murder basic human decency daily.

Ian Robert Gunn's avatar

I'm pretty sure that a scumbag like Sortor doesn't actually care if his posts hurt his own readers.

The guy has no credentials as a reporter. He probably describes himself as a "citizen reporter". Would you go to a "citizen dentist"?

Susheila Khera's avatar

Great comparison!! Actually, somebody was just telling me about a citizen dentist. Scary.
