I have always said this the constitution is only as strong as the people that uphold it. And for about 248 years, people have done a pretty good job on both sides until this administration. They’ve stomped all over it. I would even go so far as to say they shit on it. Pardon my analogy.
Well, Adam, you've done it again. Each of the last three times I've read your essays I've thought, Wow! This is the best one yet. And now I'm thinking that about this one.
The fact that it's *people* defending the Constitution that saves us each time is so clearly true, and yet I'd never thought of it quite like that, and this switch in perspective is really illuminating. Thank you.
Exactly. The constitution is an inanimate object. What is the point in it, if it is not enforced? What is the point of the law, if it is neither observed nor enforced?
I thank that kid in the air force uniform, and the guy who flew in the face of his party beccause it was the right thing, and the man who is still facing opposition to get the truth out. We appreciate you so much, Adam.
The relatively recent and appalling disregard of and outright contempt for the Constitution, the foundation of our government, is beyond appalling. Those with the power to stop it but refuse to do so are committing a heinous crime.
Excellent piece, as usual. Our power is our vote. Estimate is that about 89 million people did not vote in 2024. That's 64% of eligible voters. About 77 million voted for Trump -- making him a minority POTUS. Think about those numbers -- Americans voting for none of the above are not only a disgrace, but they inadvertently gave us King Donald the Demented.
YES! Everyone needs to stretch out of their comfort zone and make a difference in their community RIGHT NOW. This is why I signed up to be Signs Captain for the elections here in Talbot County MD, and why I'm canvassing door-to-door to promote the best local non-MAGA candidates. We all need to GET TO WORK and do what we can do!
Keep being a thorn in Trump's backside. Continue to announce how he has destroyed America with his lies and illegal actions each and every day. I want my grandchildren to enjoy their freedoms. Not worry about a man wearing diapers trying to destroy this country. Keep up the good fight.
It is true that a vast number of Americans have become complacent in the belief that the institutions conceived under the constitution are indestructible. The constitution is the collection of ideas that form What is America today. Having served 24 years in the navy I have seen places where authoritarian regimes suppress a great number of individual rights. Adam is correct in saying that this complacency is dangerous. We cannot sit back and watch as one man attempts to destroy what has been built over the course of 250 years. Let your voice be heard, take action, and no matter your affiliations, go out and vote.

Not to mention that adorable photo of a young flyboy Adam next to his jet. Thankful for both!
Yeah, no kdding! What a cutie! ;->

could that heinous crime be considered treason?
Well said Adam! I hope that people get out and vote in November to make sure the Constitution will forever stand!

Amen, and THANK YOU for all you're doing to help pull us through this Trumpian quagmire.

Spot on, as always, thank you for your insights and passion!

Perfectly stated... "we the people" are the protectors of our Constitution so that the Constitution can protect us...
We the People are the Constitution. If the Constitution is not upheld by those who took an oath, then We the People must act!
Good reminder, Adam. Thank you.
Thank you, Congressman, for this brilliant and bracing piece!
So much agreed by this veteran household representing generations of veterans and willing to stand again.
One of your finest pieces, Adam. Thank you.
