We in the nation's capital have just passed our one-year anniversary of military occupation. Hundreds of National Guard roam around mostly public monuments, metro stations and tourist destinations, standing in circle-jerk formation doing....absolutely nothing. They are most certainly *not* fighting crime. Our DC Metropolitan Police Force does that.

Meanwhile, the Reflecting Pool stays fenced and broken, the Kennedy Center's name is still covered by a tarp with the inside gutted, Jackie Kennedy's Rose Garden got paved over with concrete, a helipad is being ripped up on the South Lawn in order to build yet another helipad, and the East Wing lies in a pile of landfill somewhere.

This is what happens when you let in the riffraff in to squat in a once classy neighborhood.

A democratic Majority Congress could pass restrictions on a president's use of emergency, but tRump would just veto it... If we take back enough state legislatures in November, we need to go to the trouble to amend the Constitution to put these limits and many others into the Constitution along with enforcement mechanisms and big, long, sharp teeth. One of the most sorely needed changes is to make a way to criminally indict, try, convict, and remove a sitting president who commits crimes and unconstitutional acts.

Rick Fontaine's avatar

The process of amending the constitution is complex and in all practical purposes not possible. There would have to be a massive shift in not only the complexion of Congress but the sensibilities of many States.

The real solution going forward is to elect people who wish to govern rather than people who desire power. That is going to require focusing reform efforts on changing the role of money in politics. People should be allowed to voice their opinions, no interference on free speech, but there should be solid limits on the total amount of money anyone, any entity, or any collective can donate or otherwise spend on political ads. Even there, the ads should be required to clearly state everyone who funded them either directly or on an audited website. We, as a society, must do something to blunt the massive monetary enabled manipulation of the electorate. It is every bit as onerous as allowing a foreign nation to interfere with the political process.

Stephen Brady's avatar

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. But also, rethuglican SCOTUS has spoken and the only way limits on money in politics will not be overturned is through Constitutional Amendment.

Rick Fontaine's avatar

Agreed. My point is that if there is an effort to amend the Constitution...which will be nearly impossible given the overall complexion of the country...it should be on something that potentially has a higher value to the majority. Limiting Presidential authority should be unnecessary given a sane president and there is a legitimate argument that the president should be able to declare emergencies and have the power to act immediately. However, literally everyone should be about done with incessant negative political ads running on nonstop rotation for what is approaching a year...if not more...before an election.

The only way that happens is because people with lots of money...and a political agenda...are buying airtime...which is tantamount to buying politicians. The fantasy is that if the money were taken out of the equation and people running for office had to actually respond to the needs of the larger electorate, we might get better candidates...or at least better agenda.

A constitutional amendment focused on election campaign reform might have a chance of being adopted since it matters to all sides of the political spectrum, even if it would be resisted by the oligarchs.

and don't forget the curtain around the pillars at the front of our White House.. wonder what's happening under there?

Ellen Snyder's avatar

i wouldn't be surprised with him..

It's also what happens when congress folds to a regime and 6 maga supremes loose their copy of the constitution

i'm so sorry for everyone, including some of my old friends and co-workers, who live in the district and are seeing this occupation every single day. the prez' use of the national guard may be some sort of try-out to see what he has to do to send the national guard and/or military into blue states to interfere in the midterms. i'm so overwhelmed today just thinking about the district being an occupied city ... an occupied nation's capital.

ShayMichele's avatar

This is sooo disheartening 😥💔

Elizabeth McClain's avatar

And this is why re-enlistment of the National Guard is at a low level. Our National Guard is comprised of citizen (emphasis) soldiers. They want to serve our country differently than active duty. The toddler in chief using them like Green Army soldiers for his fun is wrong.

BigDaddy52's avatar

It will be worse when he calls in regular Army to protect his brownshirts in '28.

Elizabeth B's avatar

To be fair, a serious crime emergency will continue to exist in DC until Trump leaves. Too bad the National Guard can’t do anything about that one.

James P Petrila's avatar

Right. Roberts and his gang took care of that one by making the president immune from his daily criminal behavior.

Susan Ross's avatar

if everything‘s an emergency, then nothing‘s an emergency. This National Guard deployment is only one of the many reasons that DC should be entitled to statehood. The citizens who live there have taxation without representation, and those taxes are being used to deploy the military in their own city. Crazy. Maybe they could send the National Guard to start inspecting food? Because right now that does seem to be an actual emergency.

LeftCoastReader's avatar

Public health is one of the AF career fields, so yes they could help with food inspection.

EUWDTB's avatar

"What makes this particularly alarming is that the Guard is scheduled to remain in Washington through the 2028 presidential election. I am not predicting that Trump will order troops to interfere with it. But I did serve on the committee that investigated January 6. We learned what happens when a president decides that losing power is unacceptable and refuses to accept defeat."

This is clearly the goal of today's neofascist GOP: not only to normalize having troops patrolling DC 24/7, but also to turn it into a fortress (including an underground WH bunker disguised as "ballroom") so that this time, when they steal the 2028 election, no protesters or even police will be able to remove the GOP from the WH and Capitol Hill.

So why is everyone terrified of using the word "neofascism" in the first place?

If people don't understand that THIS is what is going on, and that it's not Trump (he's merely there to distract us) but the GOP itself that has become a neofascist party, how can they ever fight back with the clarity and determination needed to restore democracy in 2026 and 2028?

Jude's avatar

You aced it.

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

They don't want to use "neofascism" because it is so heartbreaking to hear it about our own country. That is why.

Anon's avatar

Markopolis - Yes, but why? They have no problem throwing out labels like antifa, democrat socialists and communists but then act offended when they get labeled.

Also, maybe I have this wrong, if a government insists on taking shares of companies (as T has done multiple times now) aren’t they the true definition of communism?

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

I don't know.. You would think they would see it for what it is. They do not want to see. You are not wrong. You are absolutely right. They are going to use any term or phrase they can to justify their treason. Govt. taking shares IS communism. It is mind blowing to me.

Chuck's avatar

Republicans do "not see" Trump taking a share of a company for "the government" as problematic, do "not see" withholding the Trump-Epstein files illegally as an issue, "not see" disenfranchisement as bad, "not see" overt corruption as a problem (because it's overt; ask James Comer Pyle!), "not see" violating our Constitution as anti-American, "not see" Gestapo unaccountably killing Americans in our street as repugnant and bigotry as anti-Constitutional...Republicans truly are the "not see" party.

EUWDTB's avatar

I think it's sheer ignorance. Journalists aren't trained as thorougly as they were half a century ago. They completely ignore ideology, for instance. By now, all reporting is "personalized". Individuals and their personal ambitions is all they talk about. It's a huge mistake, especially when one major party has become 100% ideological (neofascism is an ideology).

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

100 per cent. Makes me completely sick. Yes it is a HUGE mistake.

Maureen Spitz's avatar

Yes - it's Trump AND the MAGA GOP.

EUWDTB's avatar

There is no other GOP anymore. The neofascist GOP leaders threw out every Republican who wasn't a neofascist during the Biden years.

So there is no "MAGA GOP". Today, there's only a neofascist GOP. And it's installing all the means necessary to hold on to power, even if they lose future elections and long after Trump is gone.

Maureen Spitz's avatar

They can install all the means they want to - we will fight back and WIN. When we get back the House - and the Senate, we hope - justice will begin.

Anon's avatar

EUWDTB - While that might be true for the ones currently in power there’s still the GOP…otherwise we wouldn’t be here on Adam’s Substack. We agree with what he is saying but he is still a republican and we need that if we ever want to hope to keep our democracy intact. It’s tattered and ragged right now but I for one am not giving up on our children’s future. To me it’s not the letter behind the name but what their heart and morals stand for. Might not always agree how Adam voted but I value his ethics, integrity, honesty and opinion. The same is true for the voices in this community because I learn something new every day from listening to what others have to say. It’s helped me turn a maga voter back into the “normal” Republican voter that they once were (T being a massive idiot has helped too).

EUWDTB's avatar

FYI: Adam was thrown out of the GOP years ago (= after the Jan. 6 Commission).

So no, the GOP that you're talking about only still exists in your imagination... !!

Chuck's avatar

When the GOP decided that a failed coup was not a big deal and there should be no accountability for not ONLY the failed insurrection's leader, but also for its rioters, they STOPPED being a political party (hard to be a political party when you stand AGAINST the laws and Constitution of the land) and started being a cult devoted entirely to worshipping and serving Trump and the Epstein class.

The NSDAP just wanted good pay and fair trade for Germany's workers, originally: the swastikas and genocide came later after they were no longer "just" a political party...sometimes even the best-intentioned fascists stray from just taxes and policies...

Donna Adelphia's avatar

Thrown out? Tell us about that.

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

Traitors. Every last one of them.

Susheila Khera's avatar

Looks like they want to establish DC as a neofascist city state.

Ben - MD, VA, NE Florida.'s avatar

The only emergency currently in DC is Donald Trump and his minions.

Michael Otter's avatar

Trump wants to control everything. He clearly has no concept of history and historic norms. This is part of his "king complex" where he can do whatever he damned well pleases. He doesn't care that Guardsman have other military duties and jobs back home. It's all about him, always has been and always will be until he and his administration are voted out of office.

KeithN's avatar

In all fairness, Trump is creating an ongoing (financial) crime spree of his own doing in DC, so in actuality, crime won't be down until after he leaves office.

Debbie Rakestraw's avatar

I am becoming more convinced he is planning to hunker down in his new bunker under the "ballroom" and refuse to leave, claiming some problem with the election and will try to use the National Guard to support this. Every time I see him with his Trump 2028 hat or joking about a 3rd term, it reinforces my worry. I know it would be illegal to use the NG in this way, but I honestly don't think he cares, and I worry there are enough folks in the military in positions to affect the possibility of him pulling this off. Please tell me I'm crazy!

Jude's avatar

Trump doesn't give a damn' about "legal." All that matters to him is power and money. And he'll use not just the National Guard, but all the federal troops he can, plus his posse of Jan. 6ers. Plenty of room for them in his bunker "ball"room. I believe that we really have to understand that Trump will *never* willingly leave office.

Anon's avatar

Jude - He keeps claiming that he needs the bunker/ballroom for national security reasons to “protect the people” but it’s not like the people will be invited to use the bunker for their safety. It’s not for them but only for him.

Jeanne Julian's avatar

As we saw with his recent flight from Turkey, when he left staff and reporters in the “decoy” flight subject to attack, while he took another plane to London, then faked disembarking from the decoy. “Not for them, only for him.”

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

NO he will not. I cannot believe that people cannot see this. It is truly one of the saddest things I have EVER seen.

Anon's avatar

Debbie - If he goes down to his bunker and refuses to come out I’m sure some plugged air/vent holes will help deal with the problem. ;)

Chuck's avatar

We may have gone backward in 2 years with anti-science (measles, "vax autism"), anti-Constitutionalism, PedoPINO-led bigotry, removal of women's reproductive rights, focus on fossil fuels and away from renewables, and a dictoddler instead of a legitimate President; but we *DO* still posses concrete-pouring technology...😁👍

The next President can put the new helipad there! The East Wing Helipad/PedoTomb. (Saves us having to have him buried next to Ivana on the back 9 with a urinal for a headstone!)

Ida N. Zecco's avatar

The Felon is a waste of flesh and he is wasting our military in unnecessary wars, unnecessary city emergencies and depleting our arms. Get him and his corrupt administration out of office as soon as possible.

What will happen if Trump declares an emergency (any event in the Iran war could be the excuse) and cancels the Nov. election? He is certainly considering it and may well try.

We can't just say, Oh, that'd be unconstitutional, because he doesn't care and (1) the Sup. Crt. might allow it, and (2) even if the Sup. Crt. were to rule against him, chaos would already have ensued. Some states would shut down their election, while others would try to go forward -- but in the face of federal troops storming polling places. It all adds up to an invalid election, just by his uttering the damn' words.

Please give me a convincing argument for why I'm wrong about this.

Markopolis Balhaus's avatar

You're not wrong. Sounds pretty on-target to me.

Anon's avatar

Jude - At this point I don’t know if T can hold on in Iran until the election but he’s got Cuba in his sights as well. He has to create *something* so that he can meddle as much as possible. We have had elections throughout all of the other wars so far so I’m sure that they are going to come up with something. The next shoe will drop and he always projects his intentions so we should know shortly what he is thinking of doing to keep his Congress. I can just see a bunch of people pouring over law books to try to come up with something convincing.

BigDaddy52's avatar

The Guard is there for him to try to use to support his next coup. HOPING they support and defend the Constitution against the domestic enemy he is.

M. A. Porter's avatar

There is NO evidence they are Trump's minions.

BigDaddy52's avatar

No, but they're US military, and I am hoping they and their superiors honor their oaths instead of following illegal orders from traitor-in-chief bonespurs or secdoof hogshit.

Anon's avatar

BigDaddy52 - That’s why Pistol Pete fired all of the honorable ones from the ranks.

BigDaddy52's avatar

Need that AGREE button!

M. A. Porter's avatar

Hegseth has not targeted National Guard commanders yet.

BigDaddy52's avatar

Only drawback there is red state magarhoid governors. 24 states have 'donated' Guard already.

Chuck's avatar

Hard to guess where they will draw the line: as we know from PedoPINO's failed coup, he CANNOT, per the literal language of our 14th Amendment, hold public office until 2/3 of Congress votes in favor of allowing the insurrectionist to hold office again after he violated his oath to serve and defend our Constitution; so they are following NOT ONLY a 5x draft-dodging troop-hater ("suckers and losers") who's abusing their willingness to serve as CITIZEN soldiers in their community, state, or any emergency anywhere; but also the LEADER of an insurrection AGAINST the Constitution they (and he) swore an oath to uphold.

Hopefully Kelly, Crow, Slotkin and the others' message regarding the UCMJ's DEMAND that they do NOT follow unlawful orders was understood, and we will be able to count on our fellow Americans who actually *DO* honor the document and values therein if the criminal PedoPINO decides HE will choose who is "elected" next.

M. A. Porter's avatar

I envision them being a very present aid for the American people when it's time to dig the Trumpians out of OUR capital.

BigDaddy52's avatar

Am hoping you're correct!

Judy Steiner's avatar

We do not need thousands of guard troops in DC. It’s a waste of money and hurts families and careers. Trump says no one supports the military more than him. Then he should have served. He treats the military like plastic GI Joe men and foreign policy like a game of Risk.

Anon's avatar

Judy - Axis and Allies as well - but he’s the type that never follows the rules printed on the box. Makes them up as he goes along and then tosses the board game in anger when he still loses after cheating.

Scoopie's avatar

Correct, leaving the NG there shouldn't be normalized. Only good thing about it is that they're not being deployed to worse trouble spots. When my son was being recruited for the NG, he ended up being deployed twice. First, to Bosnia for the peacekeeping mission. 911 hit a month after his unit got there. A few years later, Iraq. And the recruiter had said that the NG is the last to ever be deployed. I laughed when he said that.

Judy Steiner's avatar

The Guard is among the first to be deployed.

Sharon Turner's avatar

My gut feeling is that trumpf is expecting an actual Civil War. With Federal troops roaming the streets, construction of his ten-story underground bunker, military hardware at his golf course and James Bond style machinations with his "cratering" van in Turkey, his fear is showing. And, if he plans to use some bogus emergency power to cancel the 2026 mid-terms, then he might be right to feel fearful. We might have finally found the red line.

Robot Bender's avatar

Expecting it? I think he and his minions are actively trying to start one.

Anon's avatar

Sharon - Then let him try to flee in his Qatari Force One and he might end up wishing that he didn’t rush the process to get his plane fully outfitted. People can get pretty creative when they want to and feel betrayed and cheated.

Ernie DeCaro's avatar

Crime has fallen in DC and elsewhere and it’s all been due to good policing and nothing to do with the National Guard.

Anon's avatar

Ernie - That money could have been used by the police departments to better their services. Instead it is being spent on beautification projects.
