I read this and wept over how far America has fallen and been destroyed. We once had heroes and thankfully they live on in our history to stand as beacons. We have none in the administration now. Not one!!! The opposite is true, only examples of corruption, idiocy, hubris, ignorance, and lacking of all that is of good character!
There's not much I can do, physically, at age 82 and worn out but I am doing what I can by sharing these articles with the younger generation in my family and encouraging them to get out and vote to make sure these total morons aren't able to totally destroy what my generation and beyond have built over the past 80+ years. Democracy does not stand alone. We all must do our parts. What has been broken will take years to repair but repair it is what we must do now.

What we have done, I certainly hope, is learn that we all need to be better informed and active if we want America to reclaim and retain it's greatness (with many faults that need to be addressed). I think our reputation and standing in the world has been greatly damaged. We have greatly hurt our allies and eroded their trust in us. That takes years to rebuild.
That does not excuse us from electing trump twice and bringing us to this point in the first place. Clearly that is not all of us. Yes, we will rebuild, taking years, but never at the level we once held. And Putin and his corrupt regime has to be taken down.

Roosevelt wanted an American in charge, and Ike had shown in North Africa and the Mediterranean that he could manage rival allied commanders without alienating either side. He was known for tact and consensus-building, and for keeping personal rivalries from sinking the mission. Churchill and the British chiefs accepted him. Hegseth and his boss show none of this. Gender, race and loyalty to one man are filters of the poorest kind. Perhaps someone with all of these qualities is rare, but if we always put forward the best of us, we and our allies would always come out ahead.
"knowledgable citizenry" is key. And that is not how one can describe Americans today, I am sorry to say. The media has been bought off (like everything else) by the billionaire class so they can control what informs the public. And they take those parameters from Trump/MAGA in order to buy the policies/laws/rules that will make them ever more wealthy and powerful. Oligarchs and fascists are dependent on each other and "feed" each other to retain control. Those uninformed are easy prey for the wannabe dictators who know how to manipulate them; Big Tech, social media and now AI have purposefully undermined true journalism. Just as our democracy was the envy of the world "we" now have chosen the enemies of democracy and peace with whom to align ourselves. Yes, that broken globe is now a metaphor for what Trump and his cult have wrought.
