I also agree with term limits and somehow restoring the Court to being above politics. So, WTF is wrong with "socialism" in a democratic republic? Is acting to improve the lives of those frozen out of decent housing, reasonable rents, food assistance, daycare, decent public school education, affordable means of getting to and from work, raising families in a decent environment, breathing safe air and drinking clean water, enjoying religious or spiritual or whatever freedom a bad thing? Is the GOP permitting women to think for, act for, decide for, live for, vote for, register to vote for, love whomever, parent based upon their socio-cultural roots in a free society, is that the GOP model? No fucking way! So, the billionaire/trillionaire class is now in the business of placing yet more contrictions of the "great unwashed masses" of struggling Americans and their captured party of wannabe Trumpers, wishful billionaires, throwaway commitment to our Founding Beliefs, they just wannabe left to milk to suck to drain the life out of the "underclasses" that feed their burgeoning billionaire/trillionaire coffers. In order to do this, the USA will need to turn lose of its adolescent fantasy that it is exceptional. We were exceptional when we broke from the Unuted Kingdom in 1776 and, later, created a governing document naming the rights of men as inalienable. It was exceptional when it clarified and corrected its hypocrisy by ending slavery, enfranchising women, and passing the Civil Rights bill. It was exceptional in responding wholesale with American lives, ingenuity, and commitment in fighting WWII, creating the UN, and perpetrating economic recovery across the globe. But as with every maturing society, the ills of human nature have crept in and we are no longer capable of being exceptional. Why? GREED as a net good. GOD giving us unique favor. GUNS because, secretly, we fear it's all going to be taken away. We must join the rest of the world as an equal partner now, not one with all the answers, but one who can ask really good questions and follow through with our shared plans. The USA can continue to be strong, but not if we are weak within. And we are terribly weak, and sick, inside. Time to admit it.
Overall, I agree. But experts of fascism (see Paul Krugman's interview with Schepele right after Magyar's victory) have pointed out that what made people finally rise up was a social media campaign that used AI-based fake videos and then inadvertently focused on Orban's corruption week after week.
In other words: fascism was defeated by coincidence, in Hungary. If one of the unrelated things in that social media string of events hadn't happened, Orban would still be in place.
Since it was a victory based on coincidence, I'm less optimistic than you, Adam, that it can be copy-pasted to the US.
On the other hand, the US is only in year 2 of its power grab, and it took Orban an entire decade before he managed to transform a democracy into a fascist regime. And at the time, Hungary was a very young democracy, compared to the US today.
Still, the GOP's propaganda machine has been built since Reagan and then especially Fox "News", and has put one-third of the country under a huge "alternative facts" bubble. So what will prevent them to vote for Rubio or even Vance in 2028, once Trump endorses either of them? Or a third neofascist whose image isn't spoiled by the first four years of neofascism in the US yet...?

polling suggests vance is not at all liked. he also goes whichever way the wind blows. there was a time when he condemned trump, however, then he saw a chance to elevate himself.
You're wrong. Vance has been number one in GOP primary polls ever since Trump started his second term. Once in a while, Rubio takes the first spot, but today, Rubio is again second, and 20 points behind Vance.

A majority hated Trump in 2024 too, but in the end, all that matters is who votes. If a plurality can vote for Trump when someone as experienced and fantastic as Harris is the alternative, then it is perfectly possibly that they'll vote for Vance (a more well-spoken, "mild-mannered" and "Christian" version of Trump) in 2028 too. All that is needed is that the GOP base turns out and that one other third stays home, not feeling "inspired enough" by the Democratic candidate...
Trump is deathly afraid that midterms will be his Waterloo. If the D’s win both houses he will be impeached and he knows it. Forget about the criminal justice system catching up with him, he’ll pass from natural causes before he ever goes to jail but him being the only president ever to be impeached will seal his place in infamy for all time.
