Great column! I would like to see mandatory instruction and attendance for all members of Congress about exactly what AI is and its potential for good and harm.

This would be good for the general public as well.

Dianne's avatar

And let’s also instruct the moron’s secretary of education that it’s called Ai and not A1

Like any technology, AI, is neutral. It’s how it’s used that matters and gaining national understanding and unity is critical We already know how China and Russia are using it. I don’t believe anything but divisiveness is possible under Trump. He is is chief proponent and his minions, including MAGA congress members, are the implementers and feelers. So to me the goals are very clear; Dems win Congress back in 2026, and 8647 Trump in 28. But that is too much time for chaos. Organizations like Country First, Move On, and Conservation organizations need to come together to start a UNITY movement now under strong cross political and cultural leadership. Biggest question is who is going to lead and who can facilitate working with these diverse organizations? Adam is starting to lead and can broaden. Who else can join-Senators Padilla, strong Dem governors, non-Trump tech guys? Not endorsing anyone, but we need out of this political sinkhole back to strength, discussion, compromise and caring for all Americans, not just rich white guys!

I agree with all you say. AI is something that must be pursued in a broad, nonpartisan way. And I agree we need to unify all the various grassroot movements under one strong commitment that everyone can identify with. It may be time for a new party to emerge.

I have been saying this for some time. George Washington didn't like parties for he felt it made people more loyal to their party than to their country . Almost 300 years ago, He was ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! Stop bickering and tend to what this country REALLY stands for.....HUMAN DIGNITY AND FREEDOM! We need leadership, not to tell us what to do, but to move us forward on the right path. I don't know who would be better at that than Adam Kinzinger.... or Liz Cheney.(I have some differences with Liz, but one thing I am sure of....She believes in freedom and the Constitution! Both believe in what this country is SUPPOSED to stand for. ) Perhaps we could call it what it SHOULD be.... the UNITY PARTY! The entire country speaking in one voice, not necessarily totally agreeing with everything the other feels, but determined to fight for the rights for them to do so. This I believe is sanity, I also believe that it CAN work!

Michelle, I observe that the Dems aren’t getting it, don’t have a leader and not sure they can coalesce if they did have one. That’s why I also feel a new party is needed and could succeed now. I’ve been touting the FAIR, (Freedom and Individual Responsibility Party) for some time on this site. It would be fiscally responsible, socially inclusive, and promote government reforms, cutting the deficit, and striking a better balance between government and business. In my opinion, businesses has way too much power now and will get more with the Big Beautiful bullshit business Bill, at the expense of those who are vulnerable and need a safety net. Cutting Medicaid and SNAP are going to throw more folks into poverty, but why would a billionaire care? Should we start it?

Third sentence correction should read, “implementers and fuelers.”

Agree about us needing to take the initiative. The problem is we aren’t leading on democratic values. Congress has failed to pass laws securing users’ rights to privacy. Ted Gioia posted recently about how intellectual property rights are not being enforced. If you want Americans to be excited about AI, then we need to see the guardrails. I’m running an iMac from 2009. Part of why I don’t want to upgrade is because the new operating system has AI built in to it. There are places where thinking machines make sense. Free citizens want the freedom to do their computing without someone spying on them, or appropriating their work, or having to host an AI doing who-knows-what for whom in the background.

I Resist's avatar

I read a really interesting comment from an AI tech guy. He uses AI on routine things that it can make more efficient, but doesn’t use if for creative or problem solving issues because he said it diminishes his critical thinking abilities. Even without AI, I think much of social media does the same-makes us reactive, judgmental, negative in the political arena and numbs are ability to think critically. And people say things they wouldn’t dare say to someone’s face. So it’s a good authoritarian propaganda tool. Of course, there are many good uses-keeping in touch with friends and family etc.

Extremely important points. Problem is we have a "leader" who is aligned with the bad guys. Who wants what they have. Complete control. We just seem screwed...

Kay G's avatar

Exactly - BUT ADAM we have a government run by a demented multi count felon. A President that chewed out the G7 for removing Putin - then left the meeting. A President who confuses the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Who is our SOD?

The Republicans are the majority! They are the ones who MUST make the decision to put the country back on the correct footing.

Vote to Retake control of our Defense systems including our Cyber Defense. AI is here. We can’t be waiting 10 years with no regulations on AI!!!

Whose AI is in what state? Act like the Superpower we were instead of a bunch of individual states’

Patricia Carone's avatar

Thanks for writing this Adam. It is critical information. I just hope the sane, intelligent people win out over the fools in government. It is tragic that Americans don’t have better sense when voting in leaders. Education matters!

Teri Gelini's avatar

I vote for education. It strengthens all of us to do better

I also like the added audio!

Sal Teodoro's avatar

Hi Adam….I do like the audio if you’re taking a poll. And I do agree about AI that we have to beat our adversaries but it does need checks and balances that it isn’t used for nefarious reasons. We already have Peter Theil, who Trump gave a $113 million dollar contract to, for Palantir. I think that Musk and his little minions gathered everyone’s data and are working together and will eventually use it here, on Americans. It is scary to think what can be done with this technology, but if properly used, it can be used for amazing things. Too bad we didn’t get an articulate black woman in the White House where we could have proper oversight of it.

Have a great day. 💙🇺🇸✊🏽

Europeans and other citizens of foreign countries are in disbelief that Americans especially the Congress is allowing this deranged man and his cabinet to continue onward. At first they laughed at Trump - and us! - but now they are responding with horror. They have a much clearer perspective of the extremely dangerous situation we are sinking into: wars on their countries soil is very real to them. Our “leaders” in Congress and military must put an end to this now! Legal local police in blue cities and states must be courageous by apprehending and exposing the “ICE” thugs, (mask removal, ownership of vehicles, handcuffing until they are identified as either legal or illegal). The impersonators must be arrested for kidnapping without warrants and no due process. The man who murdered and attempted murder in Minnesota was an impersonator whose approach proved very successful for his goal!

When do we stop hundreds more angry deranged men impersonating ICE from continuing to kidnap and disappear hundreds and thousands of innocent and mostly legal immigrants and even citizens?

Just my own personal thoughts on what needs to be done moving forward:

1.Protest need to keep growing in size and more U.S. flags need to be present.

2.Governors, Attorney Generals and City Mayors need to be more vocal and more involved when government officials and others are manhandled by the goons. Whoever is being assaulted needs to sue. Just make sure you didn't assault them first.

3.EVERYBODY needs to start saying "NO" including Law Firms, Universities, Companies and Police Depts.

4.The Military and National Guard need to remind themselves of the "Oath of Enlistment" that they were sworn to at their enlistment ceremony. "Defending the Constitution" First!!!

5.The News Media and Press need to stay brave because without them victory will be tougher to achieve.

Personally, I'm a white male/veteran and have not committed a crime and if some goons come over to me and try to apprehend me I would respond in a lethal manner and if I was still alive afterwords I would take them to court. "Freedom Isn't Free"

Carol Mansfield's avatar

Sounds like we need to write and call our state governors and AGs. Our AG in AZ has guts and is already suing the federal government and others. It sounds like the governors are legally most able to step in with their National Guard.

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

Here in Maricopa County it's going to be tougher because the Sheriff is MAGA!!! That should still not stop us from protesting peacefully. Fight On!!!

Christine B Lewis's avatar

I like the added audio! I also agree with you on AI

Nancy's avatar

What we DON'T need is Congress banning state laws about AI for ten years. I understand about 1% of what AI is and does, but I know THAT idea is bonkers.

Ellen H's avatar

The humans behind the AI models are where the real threat lies. Thiel, Musk, et al, have no qualms about training for evil intent.

Barry W's avatar

Banning states from passing AI laws for 10 years as defined in the Big Ugly Bill is not a good srtat to this roadmap

julie's avatar

What you describe China doing sounds exactly like what Trump wants.

Jean Haynes's avatar

I'm laughing because this administration can't lead a damn thing, let alone AI. Waiting for Mango Moron to refer to it as A1 Steak Sauce. Again, I would trust the two teenagers from the movie War Games before I would trust MAGA with anything related to our military. They can't even put on a mediocre parade. That was pathetic and embarrassing. I hope that was protest marching, because us Navy women sailors can march better than that by the second week of boot camp or we do a lot of running and push-ups.

MAGA would rather do important work like renaming everything, investigating Joe Biden until he's dead (and probably afterward), and having ICE, National Guard and the Marines harrass people.

The highlight of my week so far is watching Hegseth getting grilled by Dem Senators while the Felon was having a press conference and ruining the White House lawn with two flag poles while asking the contractors if they're legal. Even Rod Serling from the Twilight Zone couldn't make this shit up.

Oh, and can't forget all of us mass-blocking the Vice President after invading our Bluesky. He's totally wasting his time there. LOL

Marty Smith's avatar

I like your attitude!

Richard Breining's avatar

Did you notice the contractor behind and to the left of trump at the morning flagpole preparations? Every time trump said something stupid (which was often) that person grinned and looked around at his co-workers, observing their reactions. He left me with the feeling that he has a brain and knows crazy when he hears it.

Richard Breining's avatar

I can't speak for Navy women sailors (or actual military for that matter), but I did a LOT of marching in the NDCC and ROTC in my youth and you are correct... those that I saw marching in trump's parade weren't actually marching, they were out for a stroll...

I believe you are correct that it was actually a "silent protest" because they knew that trump and his "chest of drawers" (cabinet) people never served and wouldn't know rows, columns and diagonals if they saw them. Never mind being in step!

Jean Haynes's avatar

Now that you mention it, a couple of friends who are Ohio State Marching Band alumni and another friend who was in band through high school said they were expected to march better.

Quenby Morrow's avatar

I’m more concerned about the lack of regulation. AI is wrong all the time. I’m guessing it’s tough to test but people are using it all the time. We need to find ways to ensure that AI output is moral (no theft of IP, no big brother) and accurate. Believe me, I’ve worked for and with software companies my entire career. All software has bugs!! Yes, that is unequivocally true. Ask anyone. In finance, there are many procedures to ensure accuracy. And then audits to ensure accountability. Yet stuff gets through. I’m not aware of any processes or procedures required for vetting AI output.

Doreen Dalesandro's avatar

As a retired software engineer, I totally agree with you, Quenby!

Joan Bailey's avatar

This is so true Quenby.

Lawrence C Maltz's avatar

Absolutely agree. We need a specific plan to galvanize support from educational communities.

We can’t just let Silicon Valley set a profit driven strategy.

Demistify AI. Take away fear, replace it with knowledge.

Patricia's avatar

Adam, I can’t tell you how much your words and attitude gives so many of us clarity and hope where there is so little currently. We REALLY NEED a guiding light like you to lead us out of this terrible tunnel of confusion and constant side shows that might be funny if they were not real.

Thank you for your calm intelligence and leadership. I hope you are our president someday soon.
