The problem with that is that you'd be splitting the anti-Trump vote. Perhaps it would be a great idea after the Democrats get back into power -- if they ever do, if your country survives Trump. If you think about it... We do technically have more than 2 parties. We have MAGA, Republicans, Independents/Centrists, Moderates, Democrats, & Progressive Liberals. Our system isn't designed for parties and the founders despised them. We were always supposed to vote based on the candidate & not a political party.
Having more than 2 parties will never work unless we get Rank Choice voting implemented nationwide for all elections. Otherwise, if we had 3 successful parties & 3 candidates for president in the general election that were all popular? There's a good chance no candidate would reach the 270 electoral votes & the top 2 EC votes recipients would go to the House of Representatives. The Senate would elect the VP.
So, I tell people when we have this conversation that we need to not focus on trying to add more parties & instead focus on implementing Rank Choice voting & encouraging people to vote by candidate rather than by party, as the founders intended.
The extremists have gave infiltrated our government because of primaries. You could have 6 candidates in a Republican primary race. 5 of them could be perfectly normal, regular Republican candidates. Kind of like Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, & Josh Hawley all were back in 2016. Then you could have 1 Donald Trump.
Now, the first 5 candidates are going to appeal to about 80% of the population but that one unique, extreme candidate, well he's going to appeal to about 20% of the population.
Now, for the sake of making the math easy, let's say that those 20% of fringe or radical voters vote for the extreme candidate and then the remaining 5 candidates each get 16% of the votes. That extreme candidate (the Trump in this example) is going to win because he got more votes than any of the other candidates. However, only 20% of the people wanted "Trump" to be the winner while the other 80% wanted someone else. They just didn't combine their votes behind one candidate.
So, that's how the extremist candidate gets elected in the Primaries. Then, in the general election, people vote by party. We need a system that requires winners to get at least 50%+1 of the votes. And Primaries need to have the candidates all on one ballot.
