Thank you, Adam. I am printing this out to keep with other articles of great meaning. I take them with me when I travel. I read them aloud to people who need to hear them.

May our constitutional republic survive. May our country have a new birth of freedom.

Charles Kilo's avatar

Agree. Fabulous. Adam, we appreciate you.

AND, please help us understand the challenge of the lack of opposition - of rational resistance. Where is leadership? Commenting (we have an abundance on commentary) isn’t the same as leadership obviously.

Business leadership has rolled over in the face of administration/Trump‘s threats. Healthcare leadership has utterly failed to stand united to oppose the inane changes in health policy and science. University and science leadership has failed to come together in aggregate and resist the attacks from Trump. The military is rolling over and ultimately supporting this attack on the constitution. SCOTUS is a joke. The Democrats are in disarray and the never Trump Republicans lack leadership and cohesiveness as well. Not only is Trump executing on the authoritarian playbook to the letter, but society and leaders across the country are succumbing in ways that further undermine democracy and our democratic institutions.

The lack of leadership is stunning and shameful. Where will leadership come from? Does the burden fall on Indivisible, MoveOn, Women’s March and other nonprofits? Many argue that resistance has to wait until the time is right to respond more vigorously to Trump‘s attack attacks on our society and yet by the time people wake up to respond, it will be too late. It may be too late already. Waiting is a failed strategy.

So, I think it’s worth repeatedly addressing the point… Where is leadership and where will it come from and what do we need from it.

Any leadership under the control of Trump & admin is AXXED if they show opposition to Trump — not all are ‘rolling over’, altho def some have.

It is expensive in more ways than one, to stand up to the most powerful and amoral man on earth.

“Memory Makers” by Jade McGlynn offers an interesting comparison of what Putin has done in Russia to what Trump is doing in the US.

Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out.

Birds of a feather, flock together.

Everyone should read 1984. I read it in high-school and we're living it now. Truth matters and the democrats need better messaging

Need more JB Pritzgers!

Mike Fox's avatar

Totally agree on 1984. To quote "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past". To spot on for my liking.

echo4bravo's avatar

Hi Sandy Nelson. I wrote my comment before I read yours. And your conclusions are def spot on. I think we need more Pete's. lol

Mary Moore's avatar

and Gavin Newsoms and Jamie Raskins!!

Carole Ries's avatar

I just reread 1984. It’s so relevant today. Rewriting history as a tool of mind control.

SPW's avatar

Joyce Vance is going to be having a book discussion on 1984. We are supposed to be reading it now. Discussion hasn’t started quite yet. You might want to check out her Substack though.

Leslie Gottshall-Decker's avatar

Also recommend The Sower by Otavia Butler. It’s listed as Science Fiction, but like 1984, there are so many comparisons to today it’s scary. It may be fiction, but in many ways, today’s reality.

Pamela Mendenhall-Howard's avatar

Sandy.....and AOC, Jasmine Crockett, the Squad, Gavin Newsome, David Hogg, Bernie Sanders to name a few who are standing up and speaking out against trump and his regime!!!

Thank you, Adam. As it is said if we don’t know history we are doomed to repeat it. Trump can try to “sanitize” our history and we know how false it is. This cannot be sustained. Truth will prevail. We will overcome.

SPW's avatar

Heck, even when or if we know history we still manage to repeat it. I was born right after we finished fighting nazis so what are we seeing the rise again of? Next was Vietnam that we said we’d never do again and what did we allow Bush II to do? Yep; Afghanistan and Iraq. We’ve been sold on the toxic idea that somehow we here are special, exceptional and we’ve let ourselves get complacent; that we are somehow better than what history is there. We aren’t the first to fall into that trap. History is full of the shades of civilizations that drank the same purple juice that we have.

VickijH78's avatar

I agree, I am a 1948 baby, and am Jewish. My family had relatives murdered in the Holocaust. Vietnam was a part of me. Friends from high school and college died in combat, while others died early from exposure to Agent Orange, etc. We haven't learned enough, and history does repeat. We must teach our kids better history, leadership, and civics. We owe our kids this. Learning the skills to debate without hate, to compromise, etc. is vital. There are no easy answers, and we must do better. Sigh.

The main reason I will never have any respect for this man is the lying. I loathe lying, and he is a master. Your last sentence is key!

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

For me it's his narcissistic personality and lying!

Robert Garretson's avatar

Me too! It thrives in our society, but not Adam.

Thanks Adam! As a 22 year retired naval aviator, I swore an oath to the Constitution on 10 occasions. What we have now is a NOT constitutional government! We have a U.S. Congress comprised of 273 cowards who have wilted in the face of a ranting, stupid bully. We have a U.S. Supreme Court that is validating the unconstitutional notion of a Unitary Executive and which unconstitutionally declared the the president was immune from prosecution for crimes committed while in office (but only if he/she was a Republican). The only way out of this mess is a massive blue wave in '26 and a subsequent impeachment followed by the trial for insurrection that should have happened in 2019 and subsequent jailing.

Loy Rickman's avatar

Trial date should have been 2022/3

Pamela Mendenhall-Howard's avatar

Loy.....Thank you for your service! And I agree with you 100%!

Trump clearly follows the program of the Third Reich! He resembles Stalin without batteries but is a danger to the democratic way of life. At sometime Putin will reveal what he holds over Trump.

Slava Ukraine !

Thank-you, Adam. I am so disgusted by the number of Americans who praise and support this awful man. What a sad time for our country. But I know we will get through this challenging time. Thank-you for all of your inspiring words. Keep up the good fight and we will do our part. 🇺🇸

Shawn Howard AVDD's avatar

I worry about this, but also worry about the decline of truth and facts in the news media and the complete apathy and apparent (ok, I'm going to say it) intellectual laziness of the American people. The incestuous relationship between Fox News and the Trump administration is just unbelievable. How can so many American's not see this? (Right, they're too busy watching Fox News.) On top of this you have the younger generations turning to wacked-out conspiracy theory pod-casters of all stripes. America: Do yourself a favor, turn off Joe Rogan and pick up a New York Times, Washington Post or Wall Street Journal.

Laura's avatar

Couldn’t agree more. I think people believe what Fox and Rogan are spewing because they WANT to. Somehow it preserves their self concept of being a conservative, no matter how twisted and bizarre it gets.

Shawn Howard AVDD's avatar

I just don't get it. To me, the truth is so much more interesting that fiction. I think for many people it's just too hard, especially when it doesn't comport with preconceived political notions. Anyway, agree with Adam, all you here. But hate to say it, we're losing this battle.

James Rodell's avatar

Shawn, I'd add The New Republic. Time, The Week, The New Yorker, In These Times, Mother Jones and The Nation.

Shawn Howard AVDD's avatar

Foreign Affairs, The Economist, Reuters, Politico, The Atlantic, oh the Bulwark of course, shall we go on...oh wait, we're talking about the 'lamestream press' here, sorry, guess we should go back to Joe Rogan and Info Wars...

trump/magats have declared war on the Constitution to be recycled into the image of the cult leader. Whitewashing history is part of totalitarian takeover. Educated adults should know better. Apparently not!

Stephanie's avatar

I'm older and have lived through more history, so they cannot erase it from my mind. However, I do worry about the younger generations only hearing the whitewashed truths (propaganda) of this GOP if we are unable to reverse this MAGA movement.

Theresa McGinness's avatar

Thank you for sharing this piece. This sanitizing of our history is frightening.

Patricia Carone's avatar

I wish more people valued truth. Unfortunately many seem to not value it very much. This is one of the main problems.

dB's avatar

Thanks, Adam, for reminding us what is at stake. I am appalled at how damn fast everything has changed. And it has just started. I shudder to think how much damage that maniac can do in 4 years. What will this country look like? We must fight this takeover in every possible way.

Thank you Adam. Too many people don't understand the need to preserve our history and the danger of destroying it.

How Putin manages to wake up every morning without asphyxiating from laughter, I don't know.
