25th amendment time is long past due.

Diane Battista's avatar

Agreed. Mike pence should’ve done it after January 6.

Joseph Smallhoover's avatar

But simply removing him from office in January 2021 wouldn’t have stopped himself from coming back. Blame Mitch McConnell and the Republicans in the Senate for not removing him from office during the second impeachment. And blame Merrick Garland for not pursuing the criminal case earlier and more diligently. And blame Kevin and Karen for voting for him again.

Karen Fehrman's avatar

Agree but who is Karen?

Geri Guerin's avatar

It's a nonsensical label for females who were enthralled by Trump. Obviously, not you! Ever think of adopting a nickname that better describes you? (yeah, I hate it when people usurp MY name, too.

Karen Fehrman's avatar

Ya that’s what I thought it meant but wanted to check first before judging. I find it a bully tactic. I’ve had it used against me when I tried explaining my opinion on an issue.

Paul Schlotthauer's avatar

It's not only about female Trump supporters. A Karen is any white, arrogant, entitled, spoiled middle-class woman who is very demanding and uses her class privilege to get her way and make life miserable for others, especially those who serve her in restaurants, stores, etc. My sister is called Karen and it annoys the hell out of her that her perfectly normal, respectable first name has been coopted to mean something negative by stupid influencers. Bear your name proudly--don't let them take it from you!

Male chauvinist bully tactic!

It refers to basically any woman who complains and gives off a sense of entitlement. a willingness and desire to complain, and has a self-centered approach to interacting with others. My daughter has called me one when we were shopping and I complained when I was returning something and they were giving me a hard time. lol. I heard recently that it is not used anymore- younger generation now uses the name 'Jessica'

Adam--Thanks for your brilliant insights and wrapping your head around such an unbelievable action statement taken by our President. He's now likely to fast-trot himself toward declaring the Insurrection Act. Let's keep up our protests, postcards, letters, email, and phone calls to our congressional folks.

Linda's avatar

I have done all five of those suggestions over and over again ..... what's next?

Robert Miller's avatar

10,000%

Looking forward though, I think that there are years and years and years ahead of us shoring up the weaknesses in our systems of government. Some small, some perhaps insurmountable. Age restrictions and term limits would be a start.

But what about the DoJ?! I think that the DoJ should become the fifth estate, however, I am at a loss for how that structure would be staffed/filled.

Joseph Smallhoover's avatar

I’ve been reflecting on how to make the DoJ more independent. Lots of pitfalls, because of its broad scope: both managerial, prosecutorial and also advisory. One could imagine the prosecutorial function being hived off into a semi-independent agency, although I’m fairly certain that is a pretty underbaked idea. There are certainly lessons to be learned from other nations, if only we’d take our heads out of wherever they been put and look around at the lessons history (apologies, I hope I didn’t offend anyone by using that term) or other societies have to teach us….

Robert Miller's avatar

Thanks, and I agree particularly about where our heads have been.

I am repeatedly stumped by our hubris and self-exultation. Take healthcare as an example. Why do we (the US) need to try to reinvent the wheel on so many major items?! There are plenty of examples to copy from, ones that have real data showing lower costs per capita, universal coverage, and much better outcomes. Another would be privacy protections. Yet another would be pew-pew controls. And on, and on...

Joseph Smallhoover's avatar

No. The prosecutorial function is not independent in France and it is subject to lots of abuses too, but for good or bad, the shadow of the Works Wars, and colonialism still hang over France’s leaders, there are some restraints on this abuses. And the French are not afraid to take to the streets and barricades — witness the many revolutions of the last 250 years.

One thing I do very much like is the possibility of pursuing high officials in court for crimes committed while in office. SCOTUS has more or less made indictment of a sitting president impossible and the statute of limitations will often run out before a/he leaves office and can be prosecuted. The French rule prohibits prosecution while the president is in office, presto allow her to get on with national affairs, but tolls the statute of limitations so that it doesn’t start to run again until after she has left office. The recent convictions of Sarkozy for his various acts of corruption are good examples of how that would work. Transposing that to the US, it would not have been necessary for Jack Smith to seek dismissal of the indictments against Trump, the prosecution would just be put on hold and pick up again when (¿ if ?) he leaves office.

I’m sure that scholars have many examples of what has been done around the Globe and what works and what doesn’t. But America has grown increasingly anti-intellectual and risks losing all that knowledge, alas.

Pam's avatar

It doesn't matter who's to blame. Get off of that. It does NOTHING.

Kari Gunderson's avatar

Do you have any constructive suggestions?

Pam's avatar

Let's start by not sitting here, pointing fingers.

Martha S. O'Connor's avatar

And those who voted for him.

Charles's avatar

It seems like a great idea, Diane. Practically, I believe members of Trump's Regime One Cabinet would figure that two more weeks were hardly worth the effort. Needless to say, the chances of the Trump II Cabinet doing anything, other than slither around like slugs, are Zero!

Diane Battista's avatar

Well, the whole point of the 25th amendment back then and removing him even if there was two weeks left so that he could never ever hold public office let alone get back into the White House again. That would’ve prevented him.

And we would not be in this mess

Ronin Core's avatar

Mike Pence was and is boot-licking coward.

Geri Guerin's avatar

Pence might be just a bit too pacifist; I reserve the term coward for McConnell.

Nancy Schwei's avatar

Right now, I think any of the living past presidents are cowards. There has to be SOMETHING they can do!!

Marilyn D's avatar

Nancy, imho, Congress should've stopped him at the gate. The Senate has procedures that could've been used to stall and impede and disrupt all the nominations of these unclean followers in his cabinet, etc. Watch Tad Stroemer's post on this.

Mari Wilson's avatar

That's not accurate. I wanna know where the eff our GOOD, TRULY PATRIOTIC, LOYAL TO THE PEOPLE AND THE CONSTITUTION military are!

This is the only solution. This insane, corrupt, criminal regime MUST be removed!

We can't just "wait for the midterms" for cryin' out loud. The American people are being attacked (and killed) by this regime.

Mary T's avatar

I’ve been thinking the same thing lately…where are Bush, Clinton, Obama and Biden??? They need to put out a united statement and start influencing the powers that be to take this lunatic out of office!!!

Pam's avatar

That doesn't matter

We know this. He's not in the picture right now.

jfab's avatar

there are no adults in the room to invoke the 25th.

With this cabinet it will never happen

This is not tied to dementia, Personality Disorder, yes, not Alzhiemers. When we spew BS like that, we become no better than the Far Right. It's just regurgitated insults and does nothing.

sean malee's avatar

This is a sweeping statement that is very difficult to make without specific evidence not available to the public. The manifestations of cognitive decline are different in all people. One thing i have observed as a physician is that cognitive decline will limit a person’s impulse control, and allow for socially unacceptable behavior to manifest which a person may have suppressed when cognitively intact. I believe it is a possible explanation for what we are seeing.

Pam's avatar

Except...he was like this before. His behavior hasn't changed.

sean malee's avatar

Before when? It would seem that he has become increasingly unhinged as of late. I agree that he has always been megalomaniacal and an asshole, but recently he has crossed a rubicon that he may not be able to retreat from. I see progressive decline.

Pam's avatar

His last "Presidency". Sure it's worsened. He's surrounded himself with even more 'Yes men' then before. He also was basically granted immunity. He's more emboldened.

RRiveter's avatar

It's worsened bigly.

Pam's avatar

Yeah, because he cares even less.

Mike Treworgy's avatar

I have known of him since the 70s and nothing in his history can be found in which he behaved as a reasonable human, nothing! There is barely a positive adjective that can be used to describe him.

I don't think it is regurgitate don't insults. I think it is very real. Trump needs an intervention. He needs to be removed from his role as president. He is more & more dangerous to America; every day he is mouthing off something crazy.

Dr. Steven Quest's avatar

Summary: Trump is insane.

Mara Lesemann's avatar

Trump is obsessed by the Nobel Peace Prize for one reason:

Barack Obama won it.

Not JUST because Obama was president before him, but because Obama is a Black man.

To Trump, that makes Obama his inferior. Seriously. His racism has been a cornerstone - for lack of a better word - of his existence his entire life.

This racist motivation is parallel to why Jonathan Ross shot Renee Good:

Her final words - "I'm not mad at you, dude" - were her speaking to him as an equal.

Ross is a misogynist who views all women as inferiors, and THAT is why he shot and killed her.

It's the same page:

Trump is willing to drive the entire world into a catastrophic war because he didn't win a prize that a Black man did while Ross shot and killed a woman because she dared to speak to him as an equal.

The sheer cruelty of MAGA world is almost unbelievable.

Julie Dokell Cogan's avatar

Isn’t it interesting/odd that a person who openly hates black people paints himself orange? Trump IS ‘colored’.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

It’s a medical thing with Trump - rosacea - red blotchy skin.

Diane Battista's avatar

His obsession is about Obama everything to do with Obama.

Ross calling her “fuckin bitch “ after unleashing bullets into her killing her is evidence of his systemic misogyny. Men that use that word to women do not think that woman / women have value.

After he sent her car careening down the road to plow into another park car, he walked down there casually and calmly, and looked in the window, thinking to himself that he got that “bitch” that was trying to get away. Abusers do not like women they abuse and they have no value to get away from them.

They are abusive men being able to act out all of the abuse, emotional physical, racism, misogyny all their hate and their anger, unbridled getting paid for it. Doing behaviors that would otherwise land them in jail. They are not law-enforcement.

People talking about retraining ICE is crazy talk. They need to defund it.

All of our taxpayer money being spent recklessly and carelessly to do nothing but evil.

The goal is to incite a crisis and a riot fueling fear and anger reaction so the insurrection act can be declared. Something that should’ve been done on January 6.

Everything is psychological projection

Every accusation is a confession.

Again this article by the PhD talking about narcissistic collapse is reality about what we’re living through

Geri Guerin's avatar

You know--great point: he still had his phone--could have called 911. He didn't even check for a pulse when he walked to the car. Then, ICE refused to let anyone else check and see if they could help her. THAT'S what makes this guy a murderer. He had time to think after he shot--That makes his subsequent actions premeditated. And the excuse that he was still "traumatized" from being injured earlier? THAT implicates whoever released him to return to duty without a mental health evaluation--if one was even considered. Accessories before the fact.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

He wasn’t ‘traumatized’ from earlier — he was VENGEFUL.

Renee was his proverbial ‘pound of flesh’.

Now he feels very macho … but maybe also afraid of legal repercussions.

A doc reads's avatar

Mara, well said!!

Sadly, so.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

And today, MLK Day — Trump just HAD to (….. ) all over it.

TWO black men receiving the Nobel Peace Prize! Donnie’s head is exploding! 💥

Quenby Morrow's avatar

So what do Republicans say to this? Is there any recognition of the danger?

Diane Battista's avatar

They were too busy talking about Joe Biden’s mental state, which was just a diversion and projection about what they were covering up

RRiveter's avatar

100% agree. Biden was probably losing it, but I always thought "how ridiculous". Trump is only 3 years younger, has always acted like a nut, and now, even worse. The media just twisted what was obvious, and didn't say the obvious: that Trump was even with Biden, and much more vindictive.

Joseph Smallhoover's avatar

I don’t understand how they dare to show their faces in public. At least Just Dance hides his true appearance under all that makeup — is it to avoid being recognized when the face paint comes off?

Peter Tey's avatar

I think there is, but as to its size and intent....I don't know

Nancy's avatar

Not sufficient to do anything, it appears.

Geri Guerin's avatar

Well, with the ability to call in any State's National Guard, which is supposed to be controlled by the Governor of that State, and ICE, we're pretty much in Nazi Germany now.

Nancy's avatar

As the saying goes, history does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. We're definitely in rhyming mode with the world's dictators, past and present.

Michael Geline's avatar

Indeed. It’s like 🍊is already serving a third term.

Bonnie Covey's avatar

No one respects him and his delusional words put us all at risk. Those on the Supreme Court who still have a sense of obligation to the Constitution should rein him in wherever they can! It’s now urgent!!

Diane Battista's avatar

Unfortunately, the Supreme Court is very compromised

Kat Hudy's avatar

Change that to 6 Justices of the Supreme Court are compromised. 👍

Robert Miller's avatar

How can they though? Serious question.

I do not see the SC issuing warrants, and the SC cannot charge individuals outside of a case currently in front of them AFAIK.

The DoJ and the FBI are captured.

This is a huge gap in our current structure.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

As Bonnie says below : SCOTUS can ‘stop the tariffs & uphold the congress’s war powers which Trump is usurping’.

Bonnie Covey's avatar

At least they can stop the tariffs. They can also uphold Congress’s war powers which Trump is usurping. I doubt they want us to start a world war!

RRiveter's avatar

I don't think they give a shit. They have jobs for life, mansions wherever, millionaire bank accounts. They're living the Life of Riley. Why would they give one shit about a third world war or the tariffs, unless it directly affects them? And it's the same for most Magas. Unless it's directly affecting them, they just call Trump's antics "fake news".

Candace Bartsch's avatar

It is way past time for rump to be placed in a "home". He needs a secure room with no way out, two mirrors so he doesn't get lonely and a dumb phone that only plays recordings. He can also have a world map so he will see that Greenland isn't this huge piece of property. It is just a large island.

Allen B from MD's avatar

He'll need a globe to see the size of Greenland in perspective. Flat maps exaggerate the size, just like Donffrey Trumpstein does. Ask Stormy.

Anne J.'s avatar

Hopefully a home with iron bars.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

Don’t want to make a martyr of him - must also consider MAGAs going berserk.

Nancy's avatar

It all alarms me, to the point that my daily life seems compromised when by all appearances, nothing has changed. What's changed is that I am in constant state of feeling unsettled and alarmed. I can protest, and I do. I can vote, and I always do. I can contact my legislators. I have. But the craziness continues because those in a place to stop him have abandoned that role in favor of becoming servile to it. So, Adam, I appreciate that you describe so well the dangers. You have a wonderful way of expressing the dangers, but until Congress , and maybe even SCOTUS (although I think hope for the latter is past), steps up, I fear that all of the lovely language is for naught. We can't even force the DOJ to follow the law and release the Epstein Files. No law is sufficiently potent. So alarm is a mild word for how I feel. (How's that for a morning downer.)

Theresa McGinness's avatar

I’m with you Nancy. The effort to keep the faith is wearing thin. But we must.

Margaret Cruickshank's avatar

I tried to contact Sen Rick Scott, FL, (certainly not my choice) this am and had trouble with the site he uses for contact; for one thing the contact phone # had been removed. Then when I tried to send my comment—several times, it wouldn’t go through. I finally called the 202 # to patch me through to leave a message. What I’m hoping is he’s getting more negative comments, suggestions than he wants to bother with.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

Well, ‘the darkest hour is just before dawn’ … but dawn WILL come.

Personally, I see this also through the eyes of bible prophecy. Rev. 12:12.

When we get too bogged down emotionally that’s the time to take a ‘time-out’ and enjoy the things in our life that we do have control over & appreciate - ‘the fight’ can continue without us temporarily & we will be refreshed when returning to the ‘fray’.

— I suspect this is where the saying ‘He who fights & runs away, lives to fight another day’ comes in. 🌿

Nancy's avatar

Thank you for your positive and helpful words!

Gibby75's avatar

We are in more than a crisis. This is a moment of constitutional defense. Please use the following tactical roadmap to coordinate our "one voice" response to Congress.

THE TACTICAL STRIKE PLAN

• RESTORE HOUSE LEADERSHIP: Demand a Motion to Vacate the Speaker (House Rule IX) to bypass the legislative bottleneck.

• CHECK EXECUTIVE POWER: Demand Articles of Impeachment for the President regarding unauthorized military escalation.

• HALT THE ENABLERS: Demand the impeachment of AG Bondi, Sec. Hegseth, and Sec. Noem to stop the consolidation of the DOJ and the military.

THE CALL SCRIPT

Call the House switchboard at (202) 225-3121. Tell them:

"I am a constituent and a member of the Human Firewall. I demand the Representative co-sponsor a PRIVILEGED RESOLUTION TO VACATE THE CHAIR and file ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT against the President and his Cabinet enablers. We are watching your use of RULE IX today."

Kat Hudy's avatar

Add Stephen Miller to that too.

Geri Guerin's avatar

Is he impeachable? I've never understood the White House staff thing.

Gibby75's avatar

Congress has two primary paths:

• The Impeachment Path: The House of Representatives has the "sole Power of Impeachment." They can choose to define Miller as a "civil officer" and pass Articles of Impeachment. Historically, the House has very broad discretion to decide who fits this definition.

• The Legislative Path (Defunding): Since Miller’s position is within the Executive Office of the President, Congress can use the Power of the Purse to explicitly defund his specific office or salary. This is often faster than the impeachment process.

Jay Jay Eh's avatar

Good … and I understand Dems already have put forth articles of impeachment for NOEM … for what it’s worth.

Kat Hudy's avatar

If not, he can be investigated and held accountable for his crimes against our country.

Sheila ParkerStone's avatar

He's batshit crazy and he's dangerous. All we are going to get from congress are a bunch of supposed lawmakers with Hot Air collecting a paycheck.

Diane Battista's avatar

Everything that’s being done. Every evil thing that’s being done is being done using OUR taxpayer money.

Sheila ParkerStone's avatar
