I have dual EU /US citizenship, and my oldest child attends university in Europe. I am encouraging my younger child to do the same. And I am strongly encouraging them to stay in Europe. That future looks far brighter than ours in the US.

Lois W. Halbert's avatar

I understand. 4 of our neighbors who have dual citizenship. They sold their houses (except 1). They put on market the minute Trump won. They were professionals, 1 a doctor. They saw the handwriting on the wall. We are too old to move, otherwise we would. We are going to stay and resist the best we can.

Joan Bailey's avatar

Lois, we need you here to help however you can.

If your resisting against Musk I think it's working, the Tesla protest must be working!!!! This morning headlines "Elon Musk Vows to Prosecute Anti-Tesla Protest Organizersβ€”'Time to Arrest". He might try and stop the organizers but he can't stop "We The People". Fight On!!!

And doctors are already in short supply. I’m still seeing my former GP even though I moved 2 hours away years ago - there are no local docs with patient openings. Our local ophthalmology clinic has no doctor; one comes weekly from the big city. And this week I have an appointment at a dermatology clinic, with no doctor; just nurse practitioners and physicians assistants. I guess there’s a doctor who shows up for melanomas.

The first thing to do when moving, is to find a doctor, before finding a home.

Resistance makes us ok boomers young again.

I certainly wish I had dual EU/US citizenship. But I'm 72, wasn't born to parents from EU countries, and am mostly dependent on Social Security. I'm of sound mind (so far), and my husband and I could afford a pretty decent life in, say, Costa Rica or Portugal. I wish we didn't have one foot nailed to the floor, so to speak, because of family here. They are younger, however, and have more options... Life is going to be terrible here, thanks to Those Who Shall Not Be Named and their Rethuglican enablers and billionaire contributors hoping for a share of the country's treasure once it's all parted out to the highest bidders.

Paula Dean's avatar

Same here, Linda. I don't have another move in me. I am here for the duration.

Diana Smith's avatar

I am going to try to access citizenship in the UK as my mother was born there. I am too old to make a move, but I would like the idea of being a citizen somewhere else. I will do what I can here to salvage what will be left of a country I loved so younger people might have a chance. It is not easy.

James Rodell's avatar

Lois, Linda, Paula and Diana, I was born on July 4th, so here it is, come high water. (Hell already arrived). BTW, last night, Texas Paul told us the MAGA states are preparing to hammer-and-sicko a new "Constitution" for ratification before the next national election. I hope that Adam can address this in time.

We take reading through almost any news or magazine or internet article about medicine, science or technology and seeing constant references to "researchers at University of (blank)" for granted. It's appalling that we're entering an era where that won't be normal anymore, ushered in by mediocre people who have ideologically pathologized the idea of education or expertise.

Marlene Sweet's avatar

Hopefully, there will be NO era - this must NOT stand!!

JF's avatar

I have fantasies about a palace coup. Other than that, I don’t see a rescue in time.

Karen Loewenstern's avatar

So unfortunately true. Our brilliant university students who are ready to engage in scientific research will be lured away to attend foreign universities. Our many scientific advances and clinical trials will stop and we will no longer be a leader in these fields. In just a couple of months Trump has taken us from the leadership and respect of the world to being despised and shunned. So very, very sad.

Phyllis Soybel's avatar

I agree. When funding gets cut, researchers need to find new sources. Other countries will take advantage, offer them places, labs, money to move and they will. It happened in Germany, Italy among others in the interwar period, and again in the Cold War. Will the US recover? Not for many years to come. Shutting down research and labs means tremendous difficulty in kickstarting new experiments that take a long to come to fruition.

Marlene Sweet's avatar

The longer this fiasco continues - the more damage will be done - trump needs to be removed from office....

Phyllis Soybel's avatar

Indeed. It’s not just scientists. I am a historian of WWII, but I teach US History among my courses and I am concerned about being told what I can and cannot teach, since I teach at a Community College which does get federal dollars. I believe that if DJT isn’t stopped, that all academic disciplines, the education of our children and grandchildren with suffer immensely from English to History and beyond. This administration wants people to remain ill-educated because those are Trump’s real base. They’re not dumb, but they are willing to accept statements without a shred of evidence or false statements. They are quite ready to dismiss experts, longstanding evidence and don’t want to understand that science research is actually building on both successes and failures. MAGA diehards don’t or don’t want to understand that the people, here legally, are part of the reason the US was #1 in the world for so long in so many areas. Instead, they will say good riddance to those in ivory towers. They think academics don’t live in the real world. Thus, they don’t value what they choose not to understand. The brain drain is a result.

Phillis my daughter has PhD from Rutgers in European history. Her job has put her on unhirable list for last 8 years. Not only are people uninterested in European history they are rewriting our own. Trump never learned that history, like genealogy are just facts, they are just pieces of information. Not to fear. Europe is right to fear for our democracy.

Lucille Sanchez-corea's avatar

I call it willful ignorance. I’ve encountered before and it’s lethal.

JF's avatar

I just read something yesterday - probably embedded in a Bulwark piece - that claimed ignorance is more dangerous than malevolence.

Kristin Byrne's avatar

As a clinical researcher of nearly 17 years at a university losing funding, I’m devastated. This was my first job out of college and I’ve worked hard to get where I am. Not to mention the countless patients I’ve watched get access to novel therapies and get their quality of life back. I’m in rare diseases, funded mainly by industry, so my fingers are crossed my position will survive. However, I know people whose research has already been halted. I don’t know how we’ll recover from this. Many of our researchers will jump ship and go to other countries. This only weakens us, which is sadly what I believe Trump wants.

Joan Bailey's avatar

Kristin, I too believe that he wants a weak America. Then he can swoop in and β€œsave us”. But he’ll be too old, fat and sick to do that, so it’ll be up to muskrat. Oh but wait, he’ll have bleed the government’s coffers dry and doesn’t give a flip about people anyway, so there’s no help there either. Geezzz what a huge shit show this is. Can’t say I’m surprised though.

Marlene Sweet's avatar

ONLY cure for this disease: remove the causing factor...

JF's avatar

I think Trump is destroying America as a favor to Putin. It checks all the boxes.

Cindy Marshall's avatar

Thank you, Kristin, for your life-long research!

would be nice to wipe out MAGA β€˜s memory bank !

The dismantling of our country/government/democracy is real. How is a non doctor/vaccine denier head of HHS? Watching CBS Sunday Morning segment on the demolition of our cultural institutionsβ€”Kennedy Center, Smithsonian and its satellitesβ€”it is very clear as if we had any doubt that we are becoming an autocratic dictatorship. Is that redundant? Not in this case. The destruction is unfathomable and it’s been accomplished in a very short period of time.

Marlene Sweet's avatar

Again - the longer trump remains in office, the worse the damage will be - he MUST be removed from office.

JF's avatar

As I wrote earlier, a palace coup is the only way I see this ending before we are a third world country. MAGA seized all the institutions tasked with preventing this; such as firing all the Inspectors General.

Warp speed destruction. We should've taken Project 2025 literally and had a plan ready to implement. Hindsight looking at the innocence we lived in. I live

Perpetually In a State of Serious Tension =PISST

Katherine Holloway's avatar

There is a legal association that has combed Project 2025 and formulated cases against every page in the Project document. There is hope. But the speed is so overwhelming.

Marilyn D's avatar

It is overwhelming... i heard on the news it took 53 days to take over Germany. They really knew what to do, and so did the Orange Fungus Society. I hope the courts can put sand on the rails of the Train from Hell, while we organize and execute a counter-plan

Ellen Brown's avatar

Feel same. Warp speed is right!! We knew Project 2025 was real. Need to prepare for Project 2026!

Marilyn D's avatar

Are you up for it, Adam Kinzinger, Liz Cheney, Adam Schiff, Jamie Raskin, AOC, Bernie? All Come Together= ACT!!!

I think he's using the tariffs as a distraction while he is trying to dismantle the legal system. Law firms, impeaching Judges, eliminating the ability of Judges to hand out injunctions etc. etc. The fact that he keeps changing his stance on these tariffs is very telling. He's not serious about the tariffs but he is serious about taking control of the legal system. That's what keeps him out of jail.

Very scary and sad! Elon Musk is doing so much damage! These ill effects will have negative ramifications for decades to come. Elon needs to hit the road and go back to South Africa.

Marilyn D's avatar

I just saw a video of Rep Stanfield (NM?)at a Congressional hearing, asking about Musk’s benefitting by getting rid of 4-5 contracts, so his Starlink & SpaceX xan have an opening to get those government contracts.....and the people on Gullibles Island are applauding his wonderful work! (Cue retching sound)

I Resist's avatar

When I look closely at what's happening, and at warp speed, I see Trump following Putin and Orban's playbook. Navalny, in his memoir, Patriot, elucidated how Putin and his oligarchs continue to steal billions from the Russian people and that's what his dissent campaign was about - showing the Russian people how they were being duped, and many were listening and even taking action, which was costly for them. Navalny, himself, of course, paid with his life, but he believed it was worth it because he knew that oligarch cycle had to be broken if Russians were ever to have a better life.

I Resist's avatar

My personal belief is that if we can't stop this soon with overwhelming protests, there may not even be a 2026 election, let alone a 2028 because consolidation of power is happening fast across the board - Congress, the courts and the military. We have to press harder and faster.

Marilyn D's avatar

And the Scourge of Democracy announces he'll find a way to run a 3rd time! Can't we ship him & the orange fungus surrounding him, off to Gullibles Island? I'll chip in for the cargo plane that dumps them!!

Linda Devendorf's avatar

And perhaps pray for a military coup--led by the *competent* Constitution-oath-abiding generals still left, if there are any...

Joan Bailey's avatar

Totally agree with that assessment Bob. I think we are going to be shocked where our country is in 6 months from now.

Marty Smith's avatar

trump is already working on how to secure a 3rd term (if you could call it that).

JF's avatar

I’ve been predicting no more elections ever since Trump won the nomination. So many pundits refuse to go there. Which is baffling to me after what we have witnessed so far. MAGA is very rattled about the two special elections taking place tomorrow, because those were supposed to be very safe seats. If Democrats win those seats, then MAGAs will make sure it won’t happen again.

John/ Bring It On 🀠🌡πŸͺ–'s avatar

It's been almost 10 weeks and Musk is starting to get rattled, the stock market is in decline, Federal workers and Veterans are pissed off, seniors are worried and Canada and Europe is coming to grips that the US in not a reliable partner. I think enough is there to see increased crowd sizes in the near future. Continuous massive protest is the answer. We need to put some fear in these peoples heads. Fight On!!!

It’s just utterly stupid by what is going on. We’re losing brilliant minds to other countries because these morons think they are saving money. You can’t make this stuff up.

JF's avatar

It’s not about the money. This destruction is the desired result.

john maeglin's avatar

I have to remain confident that β€œstupid” is just a phase, like hula hoops, or pet rocks. Speaking of which, I’d like to see an intellect comparison between Trumpβ€˜s cabinet and a box of pet rocks.

JF's avatar

AI could analyze the level of MAGA speech and writing; it would be interesting. I bet it has been done.

Marilyn D's avatar

Can't we stop the bleeding, now? The virus is spreading so fast, as we all know.

Elon and social security benefits on dailymail what a farce. Please watch it and explain who is eligible for SS if in this country legally

Linda Ness Jones's avatar

Dolly Parton gave 1million to fund Covid research. What did Elon give? Nada. Zilch.

Will the oligarchs jump in to make up the deficit? Someone said Elon alone could end world hunger. None of the billionaires seem to have any desire to improve life on this planet.

Cindy Marshall's avatar

I don't why we're surprised, Adam! 47 doesn't want the weak and sick who can't pay for his livelyhood! Seniors are no help to him with social security! He and his muskraider grift dogers make me sick!!

I'm sad for your generation and younger! Especially Christian!

For me, I've greatly benefitted from the cancer research and now as I am in my second battle, I am dismayed that several of my research programs have been cancelled.

This isn't to feel sorry for me because I've had an awesome life! Like I said, it's for future generations!!

I will continue to fight this evil with you and am so appreciative of the information, hope and humor you offer!! πŸ™πŸ» I still believe this regime may implode sooner than later!!πŸ™πŸ»

Joan Bailey's avatar

Cindy, I pray you’re right about this administration imploding. Just as some good news comes along, like judges ruling against his ridiculous lawsuits, we get his comments about how he’s thinking of running a third time and supposedly has β€œsomethingβ€œ up his sleeve. Yeah, it’s the coup taking place right in front of our eyes.

Marty Beert's avatar

Easy to destroy! It takes intellect and planning and hard work to invent, build, and care. The orange-Hitler and his puppeteer-muskrat have no concern for mankind or for a better future. So easy to slash and burn. WHERE ARE THE SANE PEOLE TO PUT A STOP TO THE INSANE EVIL DOERS? When I receive texts from a few elected officials suggesting an impeachment, I laugh. My gosh, all the evidence TWICE to impeach didn’t work. The convicted felon was elected to serve as this country’s president. Our best friend countries are besmirched and insulted. the arts (Kennedy Center as one) are impacted, DEI as the reason. DEI … live on I hope. These are the times that try men’s/women’s soul, exponentially …. May democracy survive!
