PLEASE RUN FOR PRESIDENT!!! ❤️💙🇺🇸

Lynette Crain's avatar

Is there an opening for a former Republican House member on a Democratic presidential ticket? Is there hope for a centrist party to return to power? Asking for a friend.

Charles's avatar

When a former Republican Congressman sends such a strong message about what America should stand for, I'm ready to offer my support. I'm not hearing this message from either party. Adam, please consider running for higher office. The country needs leaders like you. We certainly not getting much leadership from the "leaders" of either party.

It's horrible. And I'm unaware of any Democratic lawmaker anywhere--since the realignment of the parties in response to the Civil Rights Act last century, of course--that has so much as threatened to withhold any kind of FEMA funds from states on the basis of the political affiliation of their governors, nor allowed the segregation of healthcare in this way. Or the breaking of legal contracts just because they displease a Dogebro or some such. This is not a zero-sum game--or any game at all--but the current republicans seem to see governing only in terms of winners and losers, with losers being anyone they don't like for any reason whatsoever. My senators, Cruz and Cornyn, and representative Beth Van Duyne (sp?), do nothing that goes against Trump, even when the hypocrisy must be noticeable even to them. As Pres. Obama said recently, had he taken ANY of the actions of this administration the screaming and calls for impeachment would have been swift and unrelenting. Again, I despair. The cloud never goes away.

As I've said, I'd happily put a "Going purple for Kinzinger" sign in my Dallas yard...

Adam: you are so right on. To become little cults or colonies is to divide. As the Beatles sang: we need to come together right now. I am optimistic because of people like you.

NO KING! YES KINZINGER!!!

Sounds like a campaign slogan!

Adam out of a lot of your very good writing, this is better, this is from your heart, and that's why it's one of your best. Really, this is something we want to hear from you in person. Hope you can start making in person appearances? I know it can be dangerous, but man we would love to see you, meet with you. And yes, we all want you to run, to be a prominent figure in the new U.S.A. political world. Keep going, we love ya!

Lynette Crain's avatar

Sounds like a very workable campaign message! No time like the present.

I’d love to see a unity ticket in 2028 with two smart veterans who both have young children and are on Substack. I don’t care which one is at the top of the ticket.

Ellen H's avatar

Adam and Pete 2028! Both veterans. Both parents. Both level headed. Both with a vision for a better future.

Cat Ely's avatar

You should see my wish list! It's almost all military, retired military. We need to get police, military, security agents to vote other than R. We don't know if Adam will run, not sure he would run as a Democrat? But whatever directions he runs, I'm a follower.

AMEN! to that!

We certainly need leaders today. We have none at the moment.

With the proper financial backing, I'm sure he would be successful. Can't run as a Republican.

They are too far gone. He is right.... the parties sit in judgement of each other. To save ourselves, we must unite as one. Lincoln once said that America will never be overcome from without, but from themselves within!

Agreed! I say or think it almost every time Adam writes something or makes a video. American needs someone like him SO BADLY right now.

I have followed you since the Impeachment effort of Trump and I continue to agree with your opinions regarding the mess that our country is in right now because Trump wasn’t impeached. I agree that it isn’t a matter of left vs right. We are all in this together and we need to work together to get back our democracy and not make excuses for this violence. We definitely must not normalize it. We can’t let our children grow up in a country that advocates violence over respecting each other.

Lois W. Halbert's avatar

Violence over respect is Trump’s motto.

Pat in AZ's avatar

Couldn't agree more 👏👌

Susan's avatar

“ I know this isn’t easy to hear. But we have to say it plainly:

We are normalizing the unthinkable.” We’ve been doing that for years, every time there’s a school shooting, every time common-sense gun legislation fails. As the violence has spun more and more out of control, we have normalized it every single time.

Jilld's avatar

My thoughts exactly. And....Adam certainly told us. I am heart broken to see all this murderous mayhem happening. Gov. Walz was in tears. Like Adam, he is also a good man. His anger surfacing later as it should. But he lost his friends. Sadness lingers to think that politicians and the public, i.e. SLC shooting, have to constantly watch their back. I feel we all do. Don't we think twice about going to these rallies? The possibility of a paradigm shift is upon us. Let's go for it. Keep marching. Demand better. Because we cannot possibly allow anything lower.

Hopeful's avatar

Thank you for this! It's brilliant. Simply brilliant! Adam Kinzinger: You're one of America's shining stars, our hope for the future. Fortunately, all politicians are not corruptible idiots!

Adam—I’m writing from the AZ/MX border as a co-founder of an organization (Voices from the Border) that provides free housing, medical care and other necessities to formerly asylum seekers, now deportees and others who lost their CBP One app appts in Nogales, Sonora, MX (the only AZ/MX port of entry that was part of the CBP One app infrastructure). We also engage in immigration related events and activism on the US side of the border. I’d like to invite you (and your wife) to the borderlands for an immersive experience —to witness the reality on the ground. As we all know, the American people are being lied to. And it’s well past time for meaningful immigration reform, pathways to asylum and work visas etc. If you’d be interested, me and my colleagues could create an itinerary that would be of value to you—and subsequently to the rest of the country. We NEED someone to be a voice of truth and reason about the border. NOBODY Is getting it right—politicians or the media. For instance, I could coordinate a meeting between you and Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway—his family is fourth generation from the borderlands—and he used to work at the DEA. He also recently (2024) went to DC to testify to Congress about the border. I could introduce you to many folks in the immigration community who know far more than myself. Voices is based out of Patagonia, AZ (18 miles from the border) and we are in close proximity to Tucson where the Sanctuary Movement began (I can connect you to those folks as well). There are MANY people here who would LOVE to speak to someone political-adjacent who is interesting in truth-telling and and begin the process of creating meaningful policies. I can be reached at voices@voicesfromtheborder.us

Here is our website:https://www.voicesfromtheborder.net

PS I grew up in Moline, IL!

Bonnie Sommer's avatar

It sounds like you are doing wonderful work. God bless you.

India Aubry's avatar

Thanks, Bonnie! Voices from the Border is a way to "give back" to the immigrant community bc we know that immigrants make America great!

Bonnie Sommer's avatar

Absolutely! Immigrants are always what has made America great, no matter where or why they come from. The only ones of us who aren’t immigrants or descended from immigrants are Native Americans and they’ve certainly been given a bum deal. Everyone should have a fair chance.

Charles Welsh's avatar

I object to the graphic illustration with this article, depicting red and blue hitting one another -- because it isn't both sides threatening violence against each other. Our situation is there one group threatening violence and projecting their own violent motives on the other group in order to justify further violence. Peaceful political action is the only thing that takes us out of this- and accurately describing what is going on is the way we start to fix this.

Nancy's avatar

I agree! We are so quick to give both sides blame when there are times, and this being one of them, when one party is in the wrong, from grifting to spreading lies and toxic language. I'm also sick of the what-aboutism that keeps happening. That's what my children did when they were very young and wanted to justify what they had done. They wanted me to give another side equal time to absolve them of any blame. That's what the adults are doing now. Unfortunately, it seems to be working. Don't people know what it's like to raise children?

Richard Breining's avatar

I largely agree with you that one group is far more focused on fomenting hate and lies, which can easily boil into violence.

Meanwhile, the other group, while IMO are far more reasonable, is not without complicity in the "us vs they" concept of Adam's article. Adam, for example, points out the false "it was staged to benefit trump" narrative that circulated after one of the trump assassination attempts. To which I will add that I have read in several instances people questioning the validity of the 2024 election, implying that the other side manipulated the results for their benefit. I doubt if that is true.

It's perfectly natural to be angry at and suspicious of the group that constantly attacks and belittles others with lies, name-calling and, in some cases, violence.

We must never stoop to that level. We must instead rely on facts, truth, the ballot box and the Constitution. NEVER violence.

Instead, we should continue to try and communicate with members of the other group, assuming we can find one who will listen (I haven't had much luck with this but I keep trying).

Communication and civil discourse are the foundations of negotiating, which can lead to mutually acceptable agreements.

We all know what opinions are like, and this is just mine. OK. I'll get off of my soapbox now. 😉

Hopeful's avatar

I appreciate your point, with this caveat: red has abandoned fidelity to the Constitution, but red won partially because blue tends to nitpick and it’s annoying. My philosophy: When it’s my turn, I pick the graphics; your turn, you choose a different pic. That said, I’m glad you made the point.

I’ve spent the past two years daily countering MAGA views online. I did this not to convert the un-convertibles but to keep the truth front and center for everyone online.

While I still believe a significant number of the MAGA faithful have been duped into believing extreme right wing lies and misinformation, over time it’s become increasingly clear that many MAGA cult members either were racist, sexist, and fascist from the start or have become so.

I’m far less willing to give the red hat wearers the benefit of the doubt anymore. Too many chances for them to wake up have been ignored.

But I’m old enough to remember the political violence of the 1960s and 1970s very clearly.

We have known this hatred before from the “love it or leave it” crowd. We have seen assassinations strip our country of primarily leftist leaders.

While the fallout from that time was an extended period of liberal domination of American politics, there’s no assurance the fallout this time won’t be the exact opposite — a triumph of global fascism over democratic principles that lasts decades.

Political violence is only justifiable under the most extreme conditions. And I’m happy to report that while the situation could be vastly better, it’s not at the point of civil war yet.

We’ve endured times of worse division than now — just consider the horror of our 5 year Civil War followed by decades of failed Reconstruction and continued conflict to this day.

We don’t have to relive the past — we can and must choose a better solution.

Let’s unite to oppose ALL political violence and unflinchingly address the real issues that divide us.

Let’s do better this time.

Hopeful's avatar

I think you're amazing! You could see that something noxious was afoot and decided to do something about it. That's my definition of AWAKE. Some of those red hats aren't simply asleep, however. They've chosen emotional gratification over problem-solving to make America better in real-time.

I hope you copy and paste your comment in other places.

Totally Agree! BUT, as long as the tyrant is in charge this is going to be a hard nut to crack!!!

lotsacatsndogs's avatar

The post also left out the J6 rioters, who were very definitely from one party only. Or the foiled assassination attempt against Gov. Whitmer. No democratic politician, to my knowledge, has condoned violence against any politician, whereas many republicans either call for it or ignore it. I agree we need to come together to condemn what's happening, but those who watch Fox news (or worse) exclusively have little if any idea about who has done what. I seesaw between hope (look at the energy and peacefulness of the rallies this weekend) and utter despair. Maybe all republicans are not MAGA cult members, but all MAGA cult members are republicans. Or are now!

Thanks for listening.

SPW's avatar

This! When the second amendment became the only amendment for some, sanity exited the room. Frankly, after Sandy Hook I saw the writing on the wall and that lay upon the shoulders of one party only. So unless and until the right side of the aisle get hold of themselves and start caring for others more than for themselves, this will continue. God knows dems have tried.

Nancy's avatar

Yes, this isn't about two sides that need equal time and consideration. Sometimes, one side is just wrong. I'm not sure why we're so afraid of that concept!

Animalspeacelove's avatar

Exactly and I love your screen name

I think that so much of this hate comes from tRump and his party. We hear them everyday saying things that before, would never have been said by a president nor any members of his party. How do we ignore what he is saying and spreading? I do call out the lies and nobody listens. They think that he is the best. I know it's not about parties - it's about people and what they do in their parties. I am praying that nothing like what happened in Minnesota never happens again, but there is so much hate going around that I feel like it could again. Thank you, Adam, for what you have said, but I am not there yet. I want the lies and corruption to stop. I want our country back and I want to quit being afraid of what could come.

graceg's avatar

I've been sick to my stomach the last few days, despite how successful the protests were, precisely because of the finger-pointing spin cycle that occurred in response to the violence. I genuinely don't understand how people can jump to that instead of grieving. Rep. Hortman and her husband were human beings who had their lives brutally and senselessly cut short. How is that not enough for people to pause, pray, cry?? I feel like I'm the crazy one for having normal human emotions anymore...

Bonnie Sommer's avatar

As Charlie Sykes reminds us every day on Substack, we are not the crazy ones. I don’t know if we’ll ever get “our country back.” Too many haters have been given permission to come out from under the rocks. But somehow, someway we’ll build it anew, the way it’s supposed to be. We need people like Adam for that . And pray helps.

Loretta Koch's avatar

Well said. If we all do it, whenever it happens around us, it will take root, and we will get back on track. Reminding myself to speak up in the moment and not give into what abouts. Wrong is wrong. I can leave it to that. A great place to start!

Thanks for all your work, Adam!

I don’t go on social media and I don’t believe in tit for tat. I have empathy for people and any kind of violence is wrong. But how many Democrats do you see applauding political violence? You don’t.

After this weekend, I only heard scarcely about Musk and the far right blaming Democrats for the heinous crimes. And it wasn’t until today when you were on live that it was brought up about how the far right megaphones were blaming a Democrat for the crime. I don’t condone it and if it were a different party, I wouldn’t blame anyone or party if I didn’t know who did it. The same would go if they weren’t politicians. Ever since Trump came on the scene is when all this political violence come about. Look at the rhetoric he tweeted last night. I never saw any of this kind of language or violence before he came along. And I’m 55yrs old. That’s my take on any of this.

Animalspeacelove's avatar

Why do you not communicate or engage on social media? How can you turn your head from stuff? This is serious. Why would you not want to know that some people that have dedicated they lives and time to the community were gunned down in cold blood. And who and what was responsible. There are republicans and MAGAs automatically blaming democrats before they even knew who did it. That guy who killed those people are indicative of one certain party who is provoking violence on the other party. It can’t be ignored we need people be present in the moment.

Sal Teodoro's avatar

Than you go on that cesspool. I go on IG on occasion. I knew what happened over the weekend. If you want to go on there and argue with a bunch of idiots or AI, go right ahead.
