Adam thanks for the share! I’m on an island. Called a Lib and Dem by maga family - literally I’m the only non-maga. My husband is now considered a RINO. I am an Independent. I see where liberals come in here & spout cranky stuff and mean stuff at you. I just don’t get it. We all have to be on the same team now - or same bunker as you said. I’ve lost so many family & friends over this election because the only way the relationships were staying intact was for me to stay silent & let them have their loud maga views, which included letting me know I was wrong all the time. It’s their identities. Fox News made sure of it. I have no faith they will ever snap out of it. I am 1 in 10 who has stood up & lost most relationships.
I also agree that language has gotten more crass and nasty since Trump. He has no respect for the office & no decorum & there is some emulation of that all around us.

I appreciate it, but I’ve had many a moment when I thought this has to be the thing that can’t be denied. Fox News is a master at making sure that doesn’t happen. However, the people have to be susceptible to that - they play a role too.
Adam, with friends like that you don't need enemies. Same thing if they're blood relatives. Yuck - they don't deserve you. To me, it doesn't matter if they're stupid, cowardly, or morally bankrupt - the result is the same.

But I can so relate. The evisceration and excommunication I have experienced from family as well as close friends, has been shocking and very painful. People I have known and loved for most of my life. I knew some were Republicans, and they knew I was a Democrat. We never had any kind of political argument. Devastating how they have turned on me. And the hardest ones are those who were the polar opposite of what they ultimately ended up supporting.
But what I remind myself of is these people have been sucked into a cult. I’m serious, it’s not me being nasty. Smart people can be brainwashed, too. Never imagined it could be half of this country though. Incomprehensible.

Thank you! It’s been heartbreaking. They got nasty & angry when Obama was President & 2016 took it to another level. Maga seems to be their identity. They can’t have a benign conversation about anything! I’ve tried jokes. I’ve asked proactively at holidays to not talk politics. I’ve tried to confront. I’ve tried to redirect like they’re toddlers. These are college educated, middle and upper class folks who function in white collar professions.
I’ve been angry, heartbroken, incredulous and everything in between. I moved in 2023 to get away & made my last trip home to visit this month. My angry brother didn’t care to see me. My sisters did & know how I feel, but still can’t stop the digs on Biden (so tired) & their glee over the win (showing me and discussing the gear they’re buying, spouting the rhetoric from Fox & the mandate). My mom was better than I thought she would be. Everything is on their terms is what I’ve found. I didn’t visit friends because their gloating Nov 6th is why I left Facebook. Praise God he won & other nasty ‘own the libs’ fun stuff.
The island is small and I’m done trying. The sad thing is I don’t think they care. My husband says you value them more than they value you trying to hang on for how things used to be. The maga movement has altered the people I care most about & I feel like I’ve lost them.

First of all, I love how you, Liz and Mitt courageously stood up to Trump and his loyalists. What he did on January 6th was unforgivable and treasonous to me. The years with Trump have taken me on a journey to find out who I am and what I believe and stand for. I started out as 32 year Republican and transitioned to a Never Trumper, then a Democrat, to a Progressive Democrat. It truly was a hard journey filled with fear and tears, but I happy for the hard lessons I had to learned and find myself confident, courageous and strong. I only want for people to be seen and given charity and mercy to learn and grow into their best selves.
I come from a very conservative, Evangelical family and served in the USAF. Many in my family join the military. I am also a loving mom of 4 kids. Because of Trump's racism, I began to do some serious digging into both parties, tracking and building files of both parties. I realized too many Republican politicians were deeply corrupt and morally bankrupt.
I watched this interview. I have some thoughts since I am very much in the liberal bubbly while still connected to my MAGA family. Yes, I think the Democrats are too easy on Republicans, particularly MAGA. I have read about 28 books this year, including yours and Liz Cheney 's books. Propaganda ruined conservatives. I read Peter Strzok book Compromised too. Putin and Trump infiltrated religious, military, and other groups by sending crazy conspiracy theories through social media. They effectively brainwashed millions of people by constantly employing tried and tested cult tactics. I read Cult of Trump also. It's painful to see how this has changed my parents and sister. My family only watched FOX and TBN everyday. It played on the TV day and night in all rooms. Now they love Putin for God's sake!
I'm in Seattle, Washington now. The Democrats here that are my age (50s)are educated and well-informed. I have a women's group of friends and we talk politics. I can see why MAGA attacked affirmative action, reproductive rights, books and public education. We definitely see how the oligarchs are swaying public opinion by using their money to influence politicians, social media, and elections and how they are affecting and rigging elections with various voter suppression tactics.
I started following you because I need to believe their are still decent Republicans out there. I faced hostility for wanting to follow Christ by helping the poor, widows, strangers, etc. By wanting to do this I was labeled a socialist, communist, liberal, and woke. My response was " I just thought I was being a Christian."
I want to set the record straight. Never Trump Republicans, like myself, are accepted on the left. We just have to find eachother. This is why I joined. We need to communicate what we've learned, share our stories and fight together against facist tyranny. Fascism is the real boogeyman around the v world today and MAGA is just that in our country.

Hearing ya all talk about loosing friends I lost friends that I have known for 50 years, I am ok with it I could not in good conscience follow a cult. None of my close family fell for it either so I got lucky. Why didn’t I fall for it well I place credit to my Grandad.
My grandfather was an interest man he was a Goldwater Republican with the heart of a liberal. He was what people would call a Hill Billy and lived off the land, Little House on the Prairie. He had 6 grade education but when it came to politics and history he never met a book he had not read so it would be a mistake to underestimate him. He taught me to look at the facts in the issues and then make my choice as to who to vote for. So when I see or hear something just sounds clicks or off I will take a minute and find the facts that is there or well was that video slowed down for effect, or was words cut out or added to a tape. And usually I am right just by find the facts.
I think just sticking to facts will help bring some of this around to the other side. But also I think that people are going to have to feel some pain before they realize that the cult of Fox News is a part of their pain. The other day I turned on Fox and Friends and Ducey was say that Trump was just kidding, that he would never do what he was saying on the trail. Well now I guess we will find out.
Once I began reading The Bulwark I was so surprised how easy it was to find common ground with conservative Republicans after 60 years of mistrust and dislike! I believe the 20 foot trench is a valid argument to coalesce against the common peril that the trump era has created. The present danger demands our cooperation with folks in other bubbles!
