It actually feels like Trump has declared war on the American people. I don’t see that going too well for him.

I Resist's avatar

Well, he has declared war and he's getting away with it. We're standing here with our thumbs in our pockets. It's time to ask Guardsman to not obey when called for duty against our own people. See sneakiness just keeps growing and compounding. It's time to stand against MAGA Congress and shove this illegality in their faces and if that doesn't work we take to the streets in numbers they cannot suppress!

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

The Guardsman can't be happy about standing around in 90 degree weather with about 65% humidity carrying all their gear without a plan. I'd be pissed!!!! Vietnam Vet.

This should be sent to every Democrat in Washington D.C. :

If Democrats got off their asses, here’s what they’d be doing now

Nine critical steps

Robert Reich

1. Don’t let Trump get away with his lies.

Have a truth squad that responds immediately with the facts and cites sources.

When Trump claims that Washington, D.C., is rife with crime, for example, get the truth out: that its crime rate is actually the lowest it’s been in 30 years. That Republicans have literally defunded the police in D.C. by stealing more than a billion dollars from the city. That Trump is dismantling the FBI and putting corrupt, unqualified jerks at the top of our federal law enforcement.

Point out that red states have higher murder rates than blue ones.

Make sure the truth gets out by repeating it over and over. If it’s not reported in the media, find out why.

2. Plan and announce ways to catch up with what we’ve lost on the environment, human rights, voting rights, labor rights, and safety nets.

Even when the orange Caligula on the Potomac is history and his lackeys are out of power, America will have a huge amount to repair, rebuild, and catch up on.

Tell the nation how you’d make up for the time and momentum we’ve lost. What sacrifices will be entailed. Explain what we must do to get back on track toward a just society, a strong democracy, and an environment that isn’t collapsing around us.

Tell us how you’ll rebuild the government that Trump and his Republican sycophants have decimated. How we’ll get back the talent we’ve lost — in science, health, the environment, worker safety, the foreign service. How we’ll build back morale.

3. Lay out a vision for the future.

Don’t stop there. Give us a vision of the future. Tell us where we could and should be, and how we can get there.

Medicare for all. Affordable child care and elder care. Affordable homes. Universal Basic Income. Paid for by higher taxes on the wealthy (including wealth tax), a tax on polluters, and a smaller military.

Also: All fossil fuels replaced by wind, solar, nuclear, conservation. Profit-sharing with employees. Living wage. Strict regulation of Wall Street including crypto, so we never again have to suffer a financial crisis and bail out the Street.

Challenge us. Tell us the truth. Demand much from us.

4. Tell us what you’d do to prevent this catastrophe from ever happening again.

Publicly lay out the laws and amendments you’ll pass to ensure this never happens again, the systems you’ll tear down, the safeguards you’ll enshrine, the plan to hold perpetrators of human atrocities accountable, the urgent commitment to immediately bring home those “disappeared” into prisons in El Salvador and other countries.

Set out the electoral reforms you’ll fight for to prevent a dictatorship from ever again forming under our very noses. Voting rights. Civil rights. Tell us how you’ll get big money out of our politics, even if it takes a constitutional amendment.

5. Mount an independent investigation.

Hold public hearings based on an independent, civilian-powered investigative coalition. Build a real-time archive of corruption, overreach, and executive abuse. Use experts, veterans, whistleblowers, journalists, watchdog organizations.

When the people now hurling us into fascist hell are held accountable, we’ll need every name, every signature, every illegal order, every act of silence — documented.

You’re not just preserving truth. You’re preparing evidence for prosecution. The more they disappear people and weaponize data, the more we need truth in the sunlight.

Investigate every author of Project 2025, every aide who defies court orders, every communications director repeating lies, every policy writer enabling cruelty.

6. Join the International Criminal Court.

You cannot control what the other side does, but you can control your own integrity. So call their bluff. Prove that the Democratic Party is still grounded in law, human rights, and ethical leadership. Join the International Criminal Court. If you’ve got nothing to hide — join.

Show the world who’s hiding bodies, bribes, and buried bank accounts. Force the GOP to explain why they’d rather protect a war criminal than sign a treaty, why they’re setting up detention facilities in an alligator-infested swamp.

And while you’re at it, publicly invite ICC observers into the United States. Make this administration explain — on camera — why they’re terrified of international law and oversight.

7. Create a digital safe haven for whistleblowers and defectors.

Not everyone inside this regime is a traitor to America. Some are scared. Some want out. Build channels for them to defect — encrypted, anonymous, and protected. Make it easy for the cracks in the system to become gaping holes.

Stop ostracizing MAGA defectors. Don’t push them back into the crowd. We don’t need purity. We need numbers. We need people willing to burn their red hats and testify against the machine they helped build.

8. Aim at the real culprits.

Don’t let Trump Republicans blame stagnant incomes and insecure jobs on immigrants, the “deep state,” transgender people, socialists, or communists.

Tell Americans the real reason why they’re working harder and getting nowhere: because big corporations are monopolizing the economy and they, and the super-rich, have amassed enough political power to rig the game for their own benefit.

Your corporate, Wall Street, and fat-cat donors won’t like you saying this, but you know something? You’ll do far better in elections by telling Americans the truth and stressing the importance of getting big money out of politics. You’ll get more small-donor support, too. And you’ll help stop Trump Republican fear-mongering and scapegoating.

9. Take back Congress in 2026.

Don’t just talk about it. Have a plan, a strategy. Mobilize us to focus our attention and resources on districts and states we have a chance of taking back. Set out measurable goals. Give us progress reports.

Stop Trump and his Republican stooge governors from super-gerrymandering their states to squeeze out even more Republican votes: have Democratic governors credibly counter-balance whatever they do — matching seat for seat, as California is attempting to do.

Recruit people to run who aren’t corporate Democrats or Wall Street Democrats but who know the economic stresses most Americans are facing, who respect working people, who speak their language, who know how to connect with voters. Tell us who you’re considering and why. Ask us for names.

Stop AIPAC and the crypto crowd from spending money on Democratic primaries. They have no business there. Put resources where they’re most needed.

Kat Hudy's avatar

I don’t understand why these commanders are going along with Trumps lying, BS tantrums and a made up crisis. Hegseth I get, he’s in on the grift with Trump, but the other guys aren’t. There has to be something they can do to fight back against this dishonest & dishonorable President. Time for another huge investigation! What Trump is doing is criminal.

I Resist's avatar

Kat, the military is very strict. If you don’t follow orders you get an Article 15 reprimand, or more likely Court Martialed with jail timee if convicted,so it’s a big decision to decide to disobey an order.

Kat Hudy's avatar

I realize that, my father was in WWII, Korea & then full time National Guard retiring as a LTC in Michigan. He is rolling over in his grave right now. This just makes me livid! This is not what any honorable President does!!! Trump is INSANE!

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

Their obligation to obey the orders of their superiors does not include orders that are illegal. Service members who follow an illegal order can be held liable and court-martialed or subject to prosecution by international tribunals. Following orders from a superior is no defense. https://www.military.com/daily-news/opinions/2025/08/13/4-out-of-5-us-troops-surveyed-understand-duty-disobey-illegal-orders.html

John. the Felon's Military theatrics gives tourists and DC residents a chance to see the Military gear it has. They will show the gear off for 30 days, and hopefully things will be back to normal for the Mayor and DC Police Dept. But you never know what this clown will do after 30 days. Its best if he passes over to the other side asap.

Kat Hudy's avatar

Yes, and I hope he does that very soon. I don’t trust him or his horrid, unqualified administration one bit. Nor do I trust having a so-called “discussion” with Putin, & certainly not on American soil! My gut instinct is ringing alarm bells big time.

JAMES JOSEPH WOLAN's avatar

This Felon, the convicted criminal, the nobody, has in mind to distract as much as possible his dealings with Epstein and Maxwell case. If more information comes out of this case it may be over for him once and for all no ifs, ands or buts.

Christopher Sweet's avatar

Agreed, it is likely that he will not return to this kind of diversion until DC is over and the guardsmen sent home. If he starts doing it in other cities, that would just be a sign of desperation.

This is really another diversion. Since there is no crisis, it’s a diversion.

It’s a diversion from The Epstein List. You know, Elon Musk’s brother Kimbal is probably on the list; Wikipedia reported that Epstein gave him one of his intimate girls in hope of forming a closer relationship with the Emperor of Mars, The Elon.

What the Supremes and The Heritage Foundation hope, is that these deployments provoke a violent response from the left. But that’s not going to happen. We are smarter than that.

I Resist's avatar

Ah, John, you remember it too, John. Hurry up and wait……and then wait some more.😳What are we waiting for? My best time was when I had my own jeep and team and my CO was 60 km away on the far side of Saigon. It only lasted a few months, but it really fit my operational style!😂

If I was a duck's avatar

On another substack, someone mentioned the DC National Guard phone lines were getting jammed with people calling them. While the commanders have to "obey" the orders, they don't necessarily have to carry out said order (as in fire upon civilians).

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

Hopefully they go back to their units and start complaining.

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

"We're standing here with our thumbs in our pockets" Bob, that was a very decent way to put it. 👍😳😂

Editorial suggestion ✍️: Trump has declared war on the American people. I don't see that going too well for him.

Ellen Brown's avatar

Trump undermines the intelligence of the American public. God forbid there is a real need for the National Guard. Will he divert resources from his all important D.C. debacle to reach those in true peril? The National Guard is for genuine emergencies. All of his emergencies are, to use one of his favorite words, “fake”. A national embarrassment as always

Mike Hammer's avatar

Trump doesn’t undermine the intelligence of the American public, he celebrates their lack of it.

Kat Hudy's avatar

Only his base. He’s not taking into consideration the majority of Patriots in OUR COUNTRY!

Linda Heath's avatar

Mike, you nailed it.

Beyond labels's avatar

He's not undermining the intelligence of the American people, he is counting on the fact that we will not intelligently see what is happening. I worry he is right.

Yes, we are an international embarrassment. He doesn't care. The majority of the people don't like what he's doing. He doesn't care. He is counting on us not rising up.

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

If the economy goes in the gutter then let's see how it goes. It make take that to happen for the light bulb to go off in peoples head.

Beyond labels's avatar

If the economy goes FARTHER in the gutter, he'll just make up better numbers. This movement is not going to lose because they will do whatever they have to to win.

David Skoglund's avatar

The “better numbers” won’t fly when people get priced out of food and other essentials. Gaslighting will only work to a point.

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

When you lose your job you really don't care about the numbers!

Beyond labels's avatar

When I said "better numbers" I only meant that he will pacify his base with numbers that look good for him, not that they would actually be better. I hear you on the personal seriousness of what is happening. If you lost your job because of Trumps actions, I am sorry. I wish you well in a future endeavor. The economy, however, is playing other tricks and impacting people, including me, in ways I never thought would be possible.

Lesley Turner's avatar

If the Economy goes in gutter he’ll just blame Biden.

Meanwhile FLOTUS is suing Hunter Biden for $1billion dollars, for saying, correctly, that Epstein introduced her to Trump. SPEAKING THE TRUTH COSTS $ONE BILLION DOLLARS now. What’s she hiding that she wants to rewrite the history on this?

Beyond labels's avatar

What are any of them hiding?

Marty Smith's avatar

I really don’t think he needs to try to hard as I’m finding less intelligent life on Earth!

John/ Bring It On 🤠🌵🪖's avatar

It's not that they are less intelligent, it's that they have bad memories!!!

Teri Gelini's avatar

So lame and he's a coward using our National Guard to make him look good in his mind but in reality he is still a coward

Pam Smith's avatar

Adam, it gets worse and worse . This has just GOT to be stopped. The man is insane and needs to be in a mental facility. Why isn’t he being arrested and put away? What’s the matter with those who have the power to save us from his dementia ? I’ve said before in prior posts, that I’m trying to stay positive , but it’s exceedingly difficult

Carole's avatar

Same here. It’s one outrageous, unconstitutional, illegal act after another, and the legislative branch is unwilling or unable to stop it. It is certainly hard to stay positive when those we look to for protection only betray our trust further.

Charles's avatar

We were dumb enough to elect Trump President of the United States - twice. Trump is protected by the Constitution, the Republican controlled Congress and the Supreme Court. The Constitution requires that a president be impeached by both Houses of Congress. The chances that this Congress will impeach Trump are exactly *Zero*.

Trump can also be removed from office under the Twenty-fifth Amendment. The Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet have to agree to removal. Is there any chance this collection of sycophantic clowns will reach that decision? Not by my book!

Marc Dupraw's avatar

Thank you. My thoughts exactly.

And every one ‘don’t get discouraged’. Really? What, exactly, how are we supposed to feel. What, exactly, are we supposed to do.

If I was a duck's avatar

Yeah, well, still don't think he was elected as much as he was "elected"

Charles's avatar

Please explain this to me. I'm pretty slow!

christine marie Mckinney's avatar

Not”we were dumb enough “. The republicans were dumb enough.

Charles's avatar

Christine, we are all electors in our system. Granted that Republicans voted heavily in favor of Trump. At the same time, there were several Democratic constituencies or factions who could not bring themselves to vote for Harris. The danger of reelecting Trump was apparently not a consideration. Finally, about a third of Democratic voters could not be bothered to vote at all. Republicans have a real advantage in any general election, because they vote reliably. Democrats, not so much! Once again, Democratic indifference cost the Democrats what may have been a winnable election.

Vivian Fletcher's avatar

Same here! It is getting scarier and scarier!! Is there NO ONE in power who can do the right thing? Put him in a mental facility OR lock him up!!! Where are all if our elected officials!!

crazy cat lady's avatar

all our elected officials are still ridiculously scared to death of him because he might primary them or call them names. they are all as guilty as he is. we wouldn't be in this mess if those same elected officials had stood up for themselves back in 2016.

Jason Merchey's avatar

Oh gosh you are the perfect person to offer insight as to how stupid and fascistic this whole approach to governing is (if you can even call it governing). Frankly I hope at some point it comes to a head between a group of generals and Trump........ I guess that could have unintended consequences, but come on if I were a military leader I would be downright pissed to see this small man, this draft dodger, using the military for his mentally ill fantasies.

Joan Bailey's avatar

Yes, totally agree Jason, that he is using the military for his mentality ill fantasies. How warped is that?

Teri Gelini's avatar

Especially "DRAFT DODGER" giving orders! The real military needs to hold to their oath to the constitution.

I Resist's avatar

The military is critical!

Beyond labels's avatar

I would be surprised if Hegseth allows any General to actually speak with Trump. And if they are speaking up in opposition, Hegseth will smille and thank them and doing Trump's bidding.

Kat Hudy's avatar

Exactly. That’s why Hegseth has to go!

May Lee's avatar

Who would have ever foreseen that the Nazis would return and take over the U.S.? In the past we have relied on good, moral people to follow the laws, regulations and "norms" of our country. Those people are gone, we're living in times that require us to stand up and be heard. The more Donald Trump makes his "vision" of America come true, the more dangerous it becomes to be the dissenting voices. We need stronger leadership to help us find the way to stop this.

FAITH WILLIAMS's avatar

He has surrounded himself with yes men, and incompetent yes men. Look at Hegseth.

Beyond labels's avatar

He did that intentionally because he engaged intelligent people the last time and they pushed back. Now we have newscasters with no experience to speak of running our country, like little kids playing war. Shoot 'em up without consequences. But these are not toy guns.

Carole's avatar

Agreed! And you are right that Trump is making his ‘vision’ of America come true — well put, because he is blinded to reality and desperately needs to create a scenario in which he is seen as a strong leader (only by his similarly blinded sycophants).

crazy cat lady's avatar

i wonder what those sycophants say when they are in private.

Jason Merchey's avatar

"Madam what you have is a republic--if you can keep it" Franklin put it.

Elizabeth F's avatar

Again, why doesn't the military leadership just say no we're not doing this? A lot of evil has been committed under the guise of "just following orders."

Laura Pauli's avatar

PLEASE RUN FOR PRESIDENT STARTING NOW! Dems are doormats and a bunch of chicken littles running around completely unorganized and thoroughly NOT strategic. dems play checkers BADLY, magas play chess. we need a STRONG STRATEGIC VOICE that will unite this mess and take on these monsters! 💙❤️🙏🏻🇺🇸⏱️

Marty Smith's avatar

Well, it’s not trump playing - he’s not smart enough-probably even for tiddilywinks.

Robert Garretson's avatar

I agree, if he runs NOW he can amplify our voices with the media. I have a plan to make it happen. Please see my substack.

Tom Donahue's avatar

Keep up the great work Adam. You’re keeping trump’s lawless regime front and center on a daily basis. I enjoyed your interview with Dan Osborn. He will make a great US Senator for Nebraska and America since he clearly understands his constituents.

Charles Long's avatar

I just don’t get it. Project 2025 was out on the internet before the election. Any decent person with half a brain KNEW the evil shit Trump and his cronies would do if he got back into power. And yet, the Dems, Biden and Garland just let it all happen. Do elected Democrats still even exist? I don’t see them DOING ANYTHING to stop this madness. Trump is running roughshod over the entire world and there’s so much capitulation. America is already unrecognizable - what will it look like by 2028? And yet everyone in my sphere continues to sleepwalk through life, because that’s all Americans have time to do it seems.

Kat Hudy's avatar

That’s not what I heard from their campaigns. Both Biden, then Harris warned everyone about project 2025. It’s a damn shame Trumps lies outshined their TRUTHS . At least that’s how I see it with the majority of the uninformed populous.

Mary O'Neill's avatar

This endangers all of us!

The felon is undermining every good thing that this country has tried for decades to make right! Then someone like the felon comes along with no moral values or conscious and destroys as much as he possibly can in a heart beat! He’s systematically destroying our great country through “Executive orders, intimidation, blackmail, lies, threats, and moral turpitude”!

Debbie's avatar

Hi Adam, I think instead of "Democrats should be railing against this" we should change our focus away from the division and change the narrative to "people in this country". Democrats, Independents, Republicans, etc, should be alarmed what's going on in this country and "rallying/railing against this". Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all this substack! It's been very helpful reading and hearing about other people's experiences and viewpoints regarding the political landscape of this country.

Joannie Reeves's avatar

Adam, it is very disturbing the way Trump and his Minions are using the National Guard, for me I am especially concerned as anyone my age or older should be, because I remember the time that the National Guard and the military did not have the respect of the American People. I remember Kent State and the College Students that were shot and killed by the National Guard, that event galvanized the angry towards the Military that was already brewing. Trump and his Minions are setting up the situations for something like Kent State to happen and in my mind it is just a matter of time.

I wish that we could find away to stop our young men and women as props for tRumps Facist ideology and stop them from being used against the American People!

crazy cat lady's avatar

i'm with you, joannie. i remember kent state and its aftermath. yes, it will happen again.

Joannie Reeves's avatar

My hope is that if/when it happens there are enough of us that remember how it affected our men and women of the military when they were treated poorly, that we embrace them and help them through the crisis. We must not allow ourselves to go back to the way we initially treated our Vietnam Vets. We are better now and understand what is going on; however, we must hold those who are truly responsible for all of this mess accountable, The Heritage Foundation, The Federalist Society, Bondi, Heggsseth, Miller, Noem, etc….. I am not putting tRump on this list because he is just the age adled fool that has the ideology and will one day pay for what he has done when people wake up and realize they were hoodwinked. These others know exactly what they are doing but they want absolute power and money no matter the cost.

Marilyn D's avatar

What's next? National Guard to LA again, Chicago? That there is no thunder clap SAYING NO, sets the precedent, numbs the resistance, just like Reagan sending troops to Greneda to distract from the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut (where we questioned what are we doing there?) Stir the folks up with an imagined enemy......ARRRGGHGHG

Carol T.'s avatar

Adam:

Not related to the National Guard, but the Epstein files: Could the FBI redactors be protected by whistleblower laws if they testified before Congress as to what they were told to redact or change in the Epstein files?
