Take him literally when he talks about third terms, delaying elections, or refusing to accept results he doesn’t like. In his mind, any election he loses is fraudulent by definition because he can only legitimately win.
The United States is already a competitive authoritarian system…elections still happen, but institutions are captured, opposition is criminalized, rules are selectively enforced, and outcomes increasingly depend on power rather than votes.

If Trump signs an executive order to have the federal government take control of our elections, I say all gloves should come off! I think we should plan for the worst and be ready for it, but hope for something better. In the end, Trump always seems to find a way to make his most maniacal dreams come true. We need to cut him off at the knees, sooner than later. And yes, I'm angry and I have HAD IT with this lunatic and his regime of cowardice and cruelty. We have allowed this pitiful, disgusting excuse of a human being to run us all ragged, ruin ties with our allies, and pick all of our pockets at the same time. I WILL NOT HAVE OUR VOTES STOLEN, TOO.
Trump's approval ratings have not changed much for a decade. It's his core supporters of white supremacists, christian nationalists, and cry babies. NOTHING will change their minds. Very scary that this percentage of our population is so psychologically and emotionally stunted.
You left out pedophiles. Seriously, that may be as much as 2% of the population and 5% of MAGA. Trump validates their perversions, normalizes assaulting children, and has to make them feel good about themselves.
I can't pry open their heads with a can opener, so I can never know exactly what an upper echelon MAGA person (Bondi and Hegseth come to mind) thinks and why they do what they do ... BUT ... it's getting harder and harder to NOT conclude that creating a population that is "psychologically and emotionally stunted" is a deliberate strategy.

You are so bright, articulate and have experience most of us dont - inside Congress, working in the Fascist’s first administration and years of military service. In my family and with my friends, I am the woman who cried Fascist as far back as ten years ago. Everyone is sick of hearing it but it’s the truth. I’ve loathed Trump for 36 years and I know a Fascist when I see one. As you said, sometimes it is authoritarian creep and then there is authoritarian leap. Having seen banners and myriad propaganda posters of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad with my own eyes right after the fall of that regime, a chill goes down my spine every time I see a new banner of Trump's face unfurled on another government building in Washington. It concisely describes the illegal moves and directions of this government and helps to cement an understanding that, yes indeed, Trump is a fascist and sadly - except for the Courts which still hold out - we are headed into becoming a Fascist Nation, if we as a majority do not continue to be active and resist. Should the Democrats not take the House and Senate. we are in grave trouble. So yes, I am glad you wrote this article.
