Let's all pray simultaneously that Trump and Co. don't figure out an end-run they can do around the judge who ruled against the J. Edgar Hoover-style voter suppression plans (the national database). All this fascistic bullshit HAS to stop, so I'm thankful and often relieved that many judges have their heads screwed on right. And that Democratic Attorneys General are willing to take stuff to court. And Norm Eisen and Marc Elias and all them.

Keep November in your thoughts, everyone--that's when the sun rises on this now-darkened land, or we go down trying...

I plan to celebrate Independence Day on Nov 3rd.

This is a great idea! I will be in Chicago at a family reunion on 7/4 and have no plans to celebrate. I think 11/4 is a much better day (that is if this goes the way we need it to go!).

Excellent! β€œSue!” Think Johnny Cash would be proud!

It is fascism!

Haven’t prayers got us to where we are now… keep praying

Seriously, where is Congress? Why aren’t they slapping this maniac and his band of miscreants down and preventing them from their paths of destruction? What are they afraid of? That they will be punished by the moron? Why aren’t they living up to their oaths? The standard oath requires them to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, bear true faith and allegiance to it, and faithfully discharge their duties. Why aren’t they????

Paul Schlotthauer's avatar

Dianne, I ask this question constantly. Never have we had a Congress so willing to let the president destroy its power. The Republicans simply submit and the Democrats don't fight hard enough. Don't they realize they are going to have to live in the mess Trump makes just as much as everyone else? Even if they don't care about the country or their constituents, you'd think at least they'd be worried about themselves. Is it really worth maintaining your seat in Congress at any price?

I have long held a theory that 'almost' everyone who has been elected and then re-elected about three or four times is 'almost' guaranteed to be corrupt. The reason is simple and logical. People with integrity can't win an election that many times. Sooner or later, they face a choice between winning the election and maintaining their integrity. If the choose integrity, they're "screened out" and they're not members of Congress anymore.

For example, I think Adam is 'probably' honest. (I only know Adam from his public image. It's really hard to be sure.) He was elected six times. The election that impresses me the most was the 2018 midterm election which saw all the Republican congressmen representing the Chicago area defeated. Adam was left as the only Republican still standing. There are exceptions.

True to the screening rule, Adam finally faced a choice between integrity and winning the next election. He picked integrity and was screened out. The majority of people still in Congress picked winning the next election. So, we know now, except for Adam and LIz Cheney, none of the other Republicans at that time had any integrity.

(To be fair, we can be pretty sure that the same is true of Democrats. But we don't have a clear-cut case to demonstrate it.)

Clearly we need term limits! I propose six 2 year terms for the House, and two 6 year terms for the Senate. 12 years should be enough for anyone to serve.

Porter Rockwell's avatar

I don’t disagree. But we should remember the adage, β€œThe road to Hell is paved with good intentions.” I’m not convinced that this would solve the problem.

Adam has discussed (in his AMA series) why people run for office in the first place. Some really want to be part of good government. Others …… Not so much. The salary and perks alone aren’t usually enough. The opportunity to profit from the power of the office makes up the difference for a lot of them. This is certainly true of little Mikey. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Political corruption is a type of β€œwhite collar crime”. I have seen very clear cut examples where sending one corporate executive to hard time in prison has cleaned up a whole layer of executives.

Enacting term limits has been a dream of many generations and, if faced with a choice, I would probably vote for it. But I think that simply bringing the hammer down on laws that currently exist (and getting rid of a few really bad ones like Citizens United and Trump vs United States) The one place where i WOULD support term limits is with judges β€” especially SCOTUS judges. (Maybe not the rank and file judges.) Their ONLY job is integrity. We MUST have a way of cleaning out the bad ones (Currently, the SCOTUS 6.)

Dianne's avatar

Definitely term limits for SCOTUS!!!!!

I think I agree with you, especially about Liz and Adam. I think it's a good test of character when a candidate does the right thing and takes the heat for it! Liz and Dick Cheney not only endorsed and voted for Harris, they campaigned for her, not necessarily because they thought she was the "best thing since sliced bread", but because she beat the hell out of Trump. (I wish someone would!) They simply put country over party and I admire that!

RJM's avatar

Peter Meijer, representing Michigan in the House, also chose integrity.

I believe that you said β€œconservative” when you intended to say β€œconservationist.” You can't say that I don't listen to every word!

Nothing so captures the grotesque absurdity of where we are than the notion that picking up a piece of paint separating from the bottom of a pool is an act of great bravery. How much lower can we go? As long as the felon in chief, the MAGAtarchy, the morbidly rich, their deplorable minions are in charge, the bottom will just keep dropping. If we are not careful, we will all be swallowed by a bottomless pit.

Remember, remember, to vote in November, expunge treason, corruption and plot.

Kandy Brown's avatar

......or that picking up that paint chip could be called treason! And they jailed a former Olympian for just biking by the pool and picking up the same stuff. I mean, such vandalism must not be tolerated, doncha think!

Pam Valente's avatar

When will the press tell us who was arrested regarding the pool and what was their true crime because the trump followers are not going to read any further than the trump headlines "Arrests Have Been Made." FOX has been true to their state TV spin.

Kandy Brown's avatar

You are correct. Fox will never tell the truth that shows Trump in any bad light. Trump is just consistently paranoid and somehow thinks everyone is out to make him look bad. Ironically, HE IS THE ONE that succeeds in that scenario. But the concrete poured over the rose garden is beginning to crack. Fucker Carlson has broken ranks with the whole party. And are you aware of a guy named Rich Logis? He was full-on MAGA and now runs an organization called "Leaving Maga". He's putting up billboards across the country and is truly making progress. I think the pendulum just might be beginning to swing in the opposite direction. We shall see.

Excellent update. Love the good news. Figured Jared was negotiating for himself and his family rather than the US. He’s not an official US government employee. He should never been a part of the U.S. diplomacy in the first place. I hope there are investigations in the future of all this corrupt activity happening with the administration. Rooting for the Albanian protesters.

Liz R's avatar

Agree. Definitely on Albania’s side. What makes anyone and especially those who are not citizens of Albania think they can move in and destroy protected land to build a resort?

Thank God for the integrity of at least some of our courts (it's a shame the Supreme Court hasn't followed their example). Sometimes I feel it is they alone who are our last line of defense against this fascist regime. I hope they'll continue to defy Trump's threats and stand up to him.

Mari Wilson's avatar

The SCOTUS 6 must be removed.

How many times can we say he’s an idiot, a psychopath, mean and rude, and should be impeached?

Sally S's avatar

Rump needs to quit suing for everything he disagrees with…it’s American tax payers money he’s using, not his. And what is his problem with the reflecting pool issue??!! I’ve had pools and they stayed good as long as chemicals are used and circulation. You think he ever cleaned a pool??!! Idiot. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Paul Schlotthauer's avatar

And I learned way back in elementary school that dark colors absorb heat while light colors reflect it--duh! (Hmm, so that must be why we wear white during the summer.). As more and more people are saying, MAGA actually stands for Make Algae Great Again. Is no one in this administration not a complete moron?

Liz R's avatar

No, I’m pretty sure they are all morons.

Kat Hudy's avatar

Nope. They are all crooked and stupid too. They are doing all of this to rile there ignorant base.

Mari Wilson's avatar

This is what he has done his ENTIRE life. Sue, sue, sue them into the ground. Which is just a stalling tactic. Which is exactly WHY he does it. Disciple of the evil incarnate, Roy Cohn. Look at all of his criminal cases post Insurrection. Delay, delay, delay. So they never even started. And of course, he couldn’t do that without his brainwashed and corrupt enablers.

He threatened banks and other companies that he was going to go bankrupt if they didn’t lower how much he owed, or lower the interest rates on what he owed them. Then he ended up doing it anyway, much of the time.

Btw, this is EXACTLY what the cult, Scientology did to our government until they got their religious tax exemption. They sued and sued and sued until they wore down the government. This was L. Ron. Hubbard’s tactic as well.

Trump is going to do what he always does, drive his businesses into bankruptcy. This time it’s going to be our entire country though. Our National Debt is so high, we will never be able to pay it off. Seriously. I really never thought about that until Adam said it recently. With enough will, the optimistic me says we can, but it will take enormous changes which will not happen in my lifetime.

So what’s going to happen if we don’t stop this fascist takeover is the corrupt Oligarchy in and outside of this country who own this Prez will end up bailing us out, which means they will be one step closer to ruling the world which is what some of the wealthiest few exactly want.

Trump, after first getting into office by wealthy white Christian nationalist males and Putin, via access to our data, via Cambridge Analytica, via Zuckerberg in 2016, is a stooge who was subsequently re-installed this time around by Thiel, Yarvin, Vance, Musk, Ellison, AIPAC…Putin is still in the mix, too of course…to get each of them what they want. Oh and Qatar & the Saudis, too. While using one another. It’s a trip.

That whole β€œfollow the money” thing from Watergate? This is the exact same thing. It’s just far, far too global now.

But keeping us all pissed off with each other is the vehicle. β€œDivide and conquer”. It works.

Liz R's avatar

Yep. Sue everyone and appeal, appeal, appeal in the hope and expectation that those being sued will go away. At worst he delays consequences and at best he never faces any.

Kate's avatar

....if anyone vandalized the pool it's Trump and his "no bid" pool service company........as for Vance saying Trump is just "trash talking"... well.....of course he's trash talking after all.......he is trash..........and kudos to the judges holding the line and to the Albanians refusing to let Jared and Ivanka (two people with the depth and intelligence of a paper plate) take their land..........

Tucker is no angel. He is distancing himself from the actual administration to be the option for the MAGA movement in 2028. He wants to be president!!!

Julianne Spargo's avatar

You are correct - we must watch Tucker carefully for his next move.

Kat Hudy's avatar

I agree. But like hell will he ever win. He’s a crook too!

Today appears on the market place 'Regime Change: Inside the Trump Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump'.

Comedian Jon Stewart and MSAM 'Morning Joe' team sat down with Haberman and Swan to discuss their headlines-making book, after it was speculated that they may’ve obtained leaked audio from sensitive Situation Room meetings – including one where members of the Trump administration gathered to strategize a way to handle the Epstein files.

Based on hundreds of interviews and unprecedented reporting from deep within the administration’s most closely guarded rooms, 'Regime Change' takes the reader inside the Situation Room and into the secret Oval Office deliberations that have

Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan bring us behind the scenes of a presidency that has transformed the culture, turned the Justice Department into an agent of retribution against the President’s enemies and the office itself into a brazen vehicle for profit. They reveal a second term propelled by a historical irony that Trump himself has come to understand: that the launched a new war in the Middle East and seen Trump seal the border, surge National Guard troops into cities, and send immigration agents into deadly clashes with protestors. indictments, the convictions, but far more powerful, more vengeful, and more willing to gamble in modern history.
