A lot was said about US farmers having to cut back on fertilizer. There was a better way for us to have reduced demand. A huge amount of nitrogen based fertilizer goes to making people’s lawns green and lush. It is somewhere between 10-20%. Putting a huge tax on fertilizer destined for lawns would have been the common sense solution to reduce the fertilizer shortage in the US.

I would add garden vegetables to that list during the summer. I also recommended canning and freezing your own. Already here in the Great Lakes States, the produce offered for sale at the farmers markets around my rural town are half the size of former years. Asparagus bundles are just 4 stalks. Carrots contained only 5. Last year they were bundles of10 and twelve respectively.
I suppose my favorite vender could have doubled or tripled her prices, but she chose to keep last summer prices and spread the reduced harvest around further. Rationing more or less.
